Glad you both enjoyed reading it, chaps. It is a nice summary of where we're at regarding Bond 26. Just thought I'd share it here as I had access to it. ๐
"The tough man of the world. The Secret Agent. The man who was only a silhouette." - Ian Fleming, Moonraker (1955).
Really appreciate the link to the article. It's a good summation of the many issues and it's nice to read something that isn't just someone getting a rise out of dancing on Bond's grave. The one thing I kind of take issue with (and I may be taking this wrong) is the notion that they do not make money off streaming. For me, Bond should be a theatrical experience (the bigger the screen, sound, etc the better). But post a decent theatrical run, the producers, et al make a nice chunk of $$$$ off streaming (which I assume has a real nice profit margin). There are films that have not done well in cinemas but have recovered quite nicely from streaming and other licensing. As far as a lower budget for Bond, there are two ways I look at that: is EON forced to go back to basics (more real spy craft, better writing, less bombastic epic Bond, etc) or do we get the more fanciful,"Epic" Bond but with the cheesy over CGI'ed look of many Amazon productions? For me, I would prefer back to basics with the spy craft, better writing, etc. My HOPE being it would force EON into a higher level of creativity. My fear is that Amazon is pushing for cheap and tacky and bleeding the Bond name with a bunch of spin-offs.
Saw this Tweet by movie writer/director Joe Russo and I wonder if this is the sort of thing people have referred to when they talk about Amazon and its metrics. One million Instagram followers needed, who knew?
It hasn’t…Ncuti has apparently said he’s done…?…they’ve finished his season 2…season 3 hasn’t been greenlit yet, but that’s been standard practice lately..

I think Bezos cares about votes on X the same way Putin cares about the opinions of the Russian people, but holding a public election gives some the illusion of having a say in the matter.

Yes, you are more than likely right…I hope so…but Amazon want a return on their money…this could be a way of getting a good return ๐คท๐ปโ๏ธ being a USA company, I’m having (more) issues with them at present…there is A LOT of anti-USA feelings where I am…
Putin would be worried if the secret services told him 90% of Russians hate him, but he wouldn't step down because of it. a bit in the same way Bezos would have an eye on public opinion when picking the next Bond, but in the end of the day it's his people who decide.

I don't want to turn this into a political thread, but I think Putin's support in Russia are way higher than we'd like to think.

Not sure where to put this, but have a question for you all.
Would you like Amazon to also get the rights to make Mission Impossible movies? They could have Felix Leiter be the head of the IMF team. Each franchise would still make stand alone films, but would occasionally borrow characters from the other franchise to complete missions.
Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope
You know what. That idea would never have been allowed a moments thought a week ago. Like Alien and Predator, they had their own fan base. Things changed as studios and ownership changed. What a great idea it is when you think about it for an hour or so, fans thought so too. Then they made them. That went well. It’s certainly a possibility now moreso than it was on Wednesday.
Casting is but one example where what made the franchise special is one or two people at the top trusting their gut. Very possibly the only two Bonds you’d have gotten from polling fans or crowdsourcing are Moore and Brosnan.
Billionaires are not on your side, ever, and despite his victory lap and casting tweet, Bezos hasn’t been CEO of Amazon since 2021.
It would not be stretch to say there's going to be lots of BS put out there from the usual suspects regarding Bond casting and pretty much anything Bond given what has occurred. The only thing I would guess is that the folks over at Amazon who are in charge of Bond more likely than won't do anything too out of left field when it comes to casting Bond (of course I am usually wrong).
While people are focusing on Amazon's potential actor choices which seemed to be a bone of contention in the "f#cking idiots" Wall Street Journal story I wonder if the reinvention we know was going on, with the help of Purvis & Wade, was acceptable to Amazon? Michael G. Wilson spoke about a Bond in his 30s, experienced, not a young Bond, and so it seemed like the reboot was going to just present Bond, as 007, in the job, just as we saw with LALD and Goldeneye. Henry Cavill turns 42 this May, according to the DOB the internet gives me, but he looks good and if they aimed for Bond26 for November 2026, then he'd be 43 and Roger Moore was 46 when LALD came out and Moore finished his run aged 58. Daniel Craig was Bond until he was 52, in 2021 when NTTD was released. Could Cavill do five movies, each three years apart and finish in 2038 aged 55?
I think the way Amazon works, and the way Hollywood works these days (elsewhere on this site I reference a director saying he was told only to hire actors with 1m+ Instagram followers) and the fact that Cavill came up in a lot of the replies to Bezos' Tweet asking who should be the new Bond. I think he probably has a better chance of being Bond than anytime since 2005/6. The only thing that might be in the way is his Warhammer 40K commitments.
Cavill is very unlikely to be Bond imo. Amazon want to create their own story with the franchise and the character, and I'm pretty sure they're looking for their own Daniel Craig. They'll probably hire an actor in his thirties. The 'worst' case scenario would be ATJ, but considering Kraven's failure, the odds seem no longer with him.
I’m not sure that’s true. More than anything they want a return on investment and the biggest profit possible. Because of that I can see them going with a “safe bet” like Cavill, similar to Brosnan becoming Bond after the Danton years. Different circumstances, but similar in the idea of playing it safe.
I really doubt they want their own Daniel Craig unless you’re referring to his box office success.

This may be of interest:
With Dr Who cancelled it could free up Ncuti Gatwa to be the next 007
Dr Who was cancelled ? Again ??? When did this happen ?
It hasn’t…Ncuti has apparently said he’s done…?…they’ve finished his season 2…season 3 hasn’t been greenlit yet, but that’s been standard practice lately..
If this is how Bond will be produced - by having votes on X - then count me out.
I think Bezos cares about votes on X the same way Putin cares about the opinions of the Russian people, but holding a public election gives some the illusion of having a say in the matter.

I think Putin would be highly delighted if it was ONLY 90% ๐

I like that Bezos is asking the fans what they want.

That’s not the Joe Russo you’re thinking of, I suspect. That one seems to only specialize in opinions.

I fully expect a 'safe' choice for Bond, someone who fans have been shouting for. Not sure if age will be a factor anymore.
Personally, I bet Henry Cavill's agent is on the phone right now.
While people are focusing on Amazon's potential actor choices which seemed to be a bone of contention in the "f#cking idiots" Wall Street Journal story I wonder if the reinvention we know was going on, with the help of Purvis & Wade, was acceptable to Amazon? You quote Cavill as a possibility or you really believe he'll be the chosen one?
I think the way Amazon works, and the way Hollywood works these days (elsewhere on this site I reference a director saying he was told only to hire actors with 1m+ Instagram followers) and the fact that Cavill came up in a lot of the replies to Bezos' Tweet asking who should be the new Bond. I don't want Cavill to be the next Bond, but Amazon MGM doesn't care what I think.

Tom Holland is the biggest British actor on Instagram according to this. I'm calling it now, Holland, Tom Holland 007.

But he looks 10 years old so I don't see it for quite some time
