I'm far from being an expert at all but is that a 5513? That's very handsome.

Asp, you have the JLC ultra thin moon I've been eyeing! Is that the older version with the gold moon? (the newer model has a silver moon if you get the steel case now). What do you think of it?

  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,603MI6 Agent

I think I bought it in 2019. I love it. The dial colour is amazing and it’s just so thin and light and elegant.

If Omega had landed on Bond's wrist thirty years earlier...

    And, the watch that I’m wearing today;

I’ve been eyeing up that Baltic, how do you find it?

  • AstonMartinoAstonMartino Posts: 19MI6 Agent

Emtiem, winding these things is damn near impossible, but that’s perhaps the only bad thing I can say about this watch. Baltic have a wonderful range of watches and, having sold over twenty different brands at a watch boutique back in my retail days, you could nestle Baltic among some long established brands and it would fit right in. No mean feat.

Heh! I can see how that might be an issue! It's a beautifully considered design though, lovely colour- the green was the one which caught my eye but that looks great.

It's fun to get a more affordable one now and then. I got myself a Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic recently, and I know it's a bit zombie-brand-ish, but it really is a handsome, well-made thing on a lovely buttery strap and the price wasn't worth worrying about. Also quite a tricky crown! ๐Ÿ˜

The winding method I use is to set the time and then hold the watch with the six or twelve o’clock side facing upwards and a couple of flicks of the wrist to give the rotor some decent spins. Despite the fact that I used to tell customers not to do this with their watches.

The Nivada SuperAntarctic is a beauty. I’m eyeing the 35mm version, but I’ve read that the crowns are small and, again, make for tricky winding. Still, the egg-shell dial and the black dial models look fantastic!

I wouldn’t worry about zombie brands. Would be nice to see one or two more of them.

Nice one, @Asp9mm. The beauty of these Seamasters is that they cannot be mistaken for a Submariner. Two distinctly different dial, hand, case and bezel layouts. Ahh, if only Omega had kept these SM300s in continuous production, with some minor upgrades and consistent marketing over the years. They may have given the Submariner a run for its money.

Agreed @AstonMartino And a shout out to the 2254. A weird sidestep that didn’t get much attention back in the day, but now has a massive cult following. If only they’d release an updated version. I think most Omega fans are gagging for them to do this, and it’s so close now with what they are doing by going back to domed box crystals and aluminium bezels. They’re constantly releasing vintage homages to the Speedmasters Time for some Seamaster love

Actually, the 2254.50.00 models were a decent seller back in the day, based on how many were sold at the store I worked in. I felt a twinge of regret back in 2010 when I sold the last model we had in the store, about three weeks after we were told this model had been discontinued. Having been on the WatchUSeek Omega forums since 2006, I saw many members there who owned the 2254.

I was tempted to get one myself, but I didn't, for two reasons. Firstly, I already had the 2531.80.00 Brosnan Bond SMP300m, which had the same diameter, weight and thickness as the 2254, and I also had the WatchCo-built SM300 (that I posted up above), which I felt had a too similar look to the 2254.

Then, in 2007, I got a 42mm Planet Ocean (like DC's model in Quantum of Solace a year later, in one of those super, super rare instances where Bond copied ME! It happened again years later with the Snowdon sunglasses) and I decided to lay off from chasing a 2254 because it would have meant three Omega watches with sword hands, thick hour marker batons, and 3,6,9 dial layouts. Of course, nowadays, I don't care about things like that, so I may one day get myself a 2254.50 because it is one of Omega's best watches of the last thirty years.

And after all that, I decided to make some slight modifications to my Brosnan Bond SMP, because I got tired of not being able to clearly ready the time on this watch in the dark. The watchmaker that I work with just happened to have a pair of old, un-used SM300 sword hands at home and...

I took this photo on that dreadful day last month, when I read that Amazon had purchased the rights to Bond, and Bezos was asking his social medial followers about who they'd pick as Bond.

I hope Omega reissues an updated 2254, but then I know they'll mess it up. It was my favourite brand for a long time, but now...
