There's an excellent Redford obituary in The Guardian.

    https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/sep/16/robert-redford-obituary

I notice, belatedly, I am on holiday, that the troubled boxer Ricky Hatton passed away. Hatton was voted the world's best boxer in 2005 by Ring magazine which is an achievement few UK boxers have managed.

Claudia Cardinale has passed away aged 87. As we know she was in "The Leopard", "Pink Panther" and "Once upon a time in America", one of my favourite movies. One of the most beautiful women on the silver screen. Rest in peace.

Jane Goodall has died at 91. No one did more to remove the idea of apes being savage monsters.

Patrick Murray 68 RIP. Best known for his role as Rodney’s cockney chancer mate Mickey Pearce in ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

The wonderful actress Patricia Routledge has passed away aged 96. Her most famous role was as Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, but she also starred in the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and starred in many films including To Sir With Love and the superb play A Woman Of No Importance.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Oh, I'm sorry to read that. She was also the bent clairvoyant in an episode of Steptoe and Son. A regular with Alan Bennett of course, and with Victoria Wood.

Not too recent a death, singer-songwriter Sonny Curtis who co-founded the Crickets with Buddy Holly, died on 19 September. The key revelation for me is that he went on to write I Fought The Law, later covered by The Clash.

Anyway, here is the Times obit to read.

I hate this thread. Every time it pops up, someone else has kielled over.

Robert Redford was an amazing actor, but it was his lifelong frirndship with Paul Newman that impressed me far more. These men were Gents and true friends off screen as well as on.

Patrick Murray... One of the unsung heros of Only Fools, everyone remembers the main cast, but the show was moulded with a cast iron supporting cast. As a boy, it was fun for me to see them pop up in other things...

Patricia Routledge will always be Hetty Wainthrope to me. One of the reasons she was so brilliant in Keeping Up was she was playing a character so unlike herself.

Another role she steals her scenes in is as Mrs Featherstone, an enthusiastic 'cool brittania' tour guide in the classic 60s film 'If Its Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium,' I saw only a few months ago.

Ms Routledge was a bit like the late Queen Elizabeth, you thought she was unstoppable

    Bugger!

This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

Then I guess you haven’t heard the original sung by The Crickets then…such a shame to hear of his passing…

I was sad to hear of the death of Dame Patricia Routledge. She was a great comic actress and Keeping Up Appearances is a classic sitcom that will stand the test of time. I also enjoyed her role in an episode of Tales of the Unexpected called "The Verger" which actually had a nice happy ending for once.

Diane Keaton dies aged 79 - didn't see that one coming.

Not on the BBC website last time of looking...

Rest in Peace Ms. Diane Keaton.

    A true legend of cinema.

Not too long ago I watched one of the earliest episodes of NIGHT GALLERY, where a mostly-unknown Diane Keaton played a nurse to DR. NO's Joseph Wiseman. She was so fresh and pretty you can see why she became a major star. RIP.

That's really sad about Diane Keaton, a great and yet undervalued actress. Woody Allen understood her. She was magical as Annie Hall, one of the most natural unconcerned performances ever seen on screen, a worthy Oscar winner. RIP.

I recently saw Annie Hall. Wonderful performance! RIP Diane Keaton.

Sad to hear that actress Prunella Scales has died, she looked with-it in recent photos, nicely turned out and happy despite her husband Timothy West having died in the last year and of course her age (she was 93) and dementia condition.

Some great clips of her from Fawlty Towers, and good to see them both in the Canal Journeys series. Probably the last surviving actor from the Charles Laughton black and white film, Hobson's Choice.

I remember Prunella from both Fawlty Towers and Canal Journeys. She'll be missed.

RIP Prunella, the whole cast of Fawlty Towers were faultless, and we will never see the likes of that series again.

Tscheky Karyo, who we remember from the role of Dimitri Mishkin in Goldeneye, has passed away. He also starred in movies such as "La femme Nikita", A very long angagement" and The Patriot. Rest in peace.

I was about contribute about Tchéky Karyo's unfortunate, relatively untimely passing (now all of the the supporting GoldenEye bad guys with faux/cod Russian accents are dead).

Ah ha, who could forget him? But three actors in a row playing GE bad guys dying in their early 70s is pretty disappointing.

There is however a Goldeneye bad girl with a faux Russian accent who's very much alive:

I see Lee Tamahori has passed away after battling Parkinson's Disease. I did not know he was suffering; it isn't a pleasant ailment. I wasn't impressed with Die Another Day but it has its moments and that sums up Tamahori's whole ouvre to me, some interesting moments. RIP, Lee.
