"If a Jelly Fish Could Slap a Rat in the Face" will be the title of Bond 26.

The mad time capsule is a good idea, I think. Just make it a bit (OK, quite a lot) less American and bury one ... anywhere. Certainly more interesting than what they really put in them.

Does an editor think of a title to which a writer works, or does the writer submit a story which is then re-titled as salubriously as possible? I mean, "$5 Playdolls etc" sounds like it'll be written to order.

Thanks for that, CHB, though I don't think I'd ever read one!

I don’t know of the editorial process but my guess would be that the editor commissions an author to write a story around a given plot and an appropriate title is added later.

The last 2 or 3 are bordering on Bond covers of the 50s.

Just got to love those story titles.

The artist must surely realise that you can't stop a bunch of rampaging rhinos with a pistol (or pretty much anything else), but it makes an eye-catching cover. The only story there I'd read is the last one, about Operator 5.

Yeah! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ That UFO detector is hilarious and I like the television bank ad as well.

Domenica del Corriere was an Italian weekly newspaper which ended in 1989 after a 90 year run. It was notable for its painted covers depicting the main news topic of the week - this one showing the melee at the opening of the Goldfinger movie where the famous Aston turned up as part of the publicity.

Love the vampire one! The second has an Indiana Jones vibe to it.

And the 007 cover is fantastic.

  • Napoleon PluralNapoleon Plural LondonPosts: 11,064MI6 Agent

Yes, that second one is a movie in itself, you could - or would want to - devise an entire film just to showcase that scene.

But the other one a post back - I mean, they call her Fraulein Torture or the Kill Queen of Ravenbruck, which is it?

The last one looks strange! The 2nd I'm guessing is from the 70s but the others... the 40s? Also, and you might have mentioned it already, but how true are those "true" cases?

  • CoolHandBondCoolHandBond Mactan IslandPosts: 9,515MI6 Agent

Probably as true as the Fargo film and television series!

That Alice comic is a real oddity from pre-code 1951, I’ve never seen a copy, I would imagine it’s worth quite a lot.

And you’re spot on with the dates, Barbel, 40/50’s with the police issues, 70’s for Kung Fu.

Those home made posters are terrific, kudos to the designer. And of course the TB one has always looked terrific.

Love those titles and drawings, you don’t really need to read the story afterwards! One of them is labelled "Special Fiction Bonus" - does that mean the others aren't fiction? ๐Ÿซจ

That reminds me that Fleming's TSWLM was retitled as the more evocative but less classy Motel Nymph when it published by Stag magazine in the US.
