I had that "Pow!" and the gift! That and many others. Now if I'd kept them all in mint condition in a sealed box for 60 years ....
But as the eldest of 4 brothers that just was never going to happen. They got passed around and eventually even swapped with friends, as I said earlier.
It’s coming to the end of summer here at the end of the month and summer in UK begins in June. Here are some holiday specials in the pocket size format (5x7.5 inches) as in the popular COMMANDO comic that is still going today.
Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.
COMMANDO - 4 new comics are published every fortnight (2 are now reprints of earlier comics) and it’s approaching the 6000th edition later this year. Along with BEANO and 2000AD they are the last men standing in current British comic publishing (in the pure comic sense as we know it).
Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.
Some celebrities of the day had their own comic strips, Arthur Askey was one. I was never a fan of Askey but he is rather good in the classic 1941 movie The Ghost Train. A joke he said that I always remembered was “Val Doonican is one star who won’t get a personalised number plate.”
And John Wayne had his own comic…
Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.
I never cared much for Askey either. He was often on tv when I was a kid, and I didn't find him funny at all.
John Wayne, now, I liked him. Again his movies were on 📺 a lot and my family always looked forward to them.
I didn't know he had a comic series, and definitely haven't seen that. I know other stars had their own comic series, perhaps you could show us a few here?
Edit: and if you've already done that, my apologies. We're nearly 1000 pages in!

I didn’t quite ‘get’ Arthur Askey either…he was usually on tv singing his “Busy Bee” song…
Topper & Beezer I did read, when I could get a copy…the two you show are just before my time though 👀
For those waiting for the next instalments of DoT and Universal Monsters, they are in the pipeline.
50 years ago Britain’s most controversial comic was launched - using the first Superman title this comic hit the newsagents like a battering ram…
I’ve posted the Hook Jaw strip before so let’s concentrate on Dredger and The Running Man.
As Hook Jaw was based on Jaws, Dredger was based on Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry…
The Running Man was 6 years before Stephen King used the title in his Richard Bachman novel and was a continuing story which lasted for several weeks before it’s well thought out conclusion…

Dredger is poorly written, but I guess that’s just the first one…
The Running Man has The Fugitive vibes…but I’m not sure plastic surgery heals that quickly 😁 and they wouldn’t leave his clothes hanging about 🤗
Apparently it’s been picked up for a television series but it’s very much in the planning stages with no actual details having been released.
My pleasure in posting DoT and I’m glad to see positive reviews of it on here, I’m also happy to see reviews that are not so good as it indicates what is popular and what’s not. DoT and Universal Monsters are the ones at the moment with The Running Man as a filler between those two being published, I may continue Dredger for a while as well, even though it’s got some poor feedback.

It returns 😁 Thanks so much 🍸
It’s still interesting to read other comic strips…good, bad or indifferent…it shows what was popular (or not) in days gone by.

Comics with free gifts intact fetch high prices at auction nowadays, these examples would achieve £250 plus each, with ease.

And that’s why they are so rare and fetch those crazy prices!

That 2nd cover looks very Bond-like.
"Commando" is still going today??? Well, I'd never have thought that.
Yea, I’m surprised Commando is still going too…I bought a few back in the day…

6000 editions! Remarkable!
This week many years ago…

Requests are always welcome and I will get onto your suggestion as soon as possible, Barbel.
You’re just a youngster @Sir Miles 😁

If only…if only 😩🤣
@Barbel asked to see some other real life stars who had comics devoted to them…most of them are of the cowboy genre…
Thanks for that, CHB. It seems a strange concept but it must have worked for there to have been so many.
I wonder what they got paid for allowing these comics to use their image…🤔
I have no idea but I imagine John Wayne and Alan Ladd got a good deal!

ACTION #2
I agree that Dredger is quite poor, but The Running Man looks good.
THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #37
To be continued…
It's back! 😀
I love this series, and of course am looking forward to more. Many thanks, CHB, for introducing us to this.
(Total sidetrack, but does anyone know if there are plans to make it a film or tv series?)

THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #37 Part 2
The conclusion to issue #37 is next…
I really like this one. The evangelism part seemed very convincing, and then we're off hunting a well-known cryptid. Suits me.
This is all good…it’s been a brilliant series so far - I just don’t want it to end…
@Barbel @Sir Miles I agree, it’s top quality writing and artwork.
THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #37 Part 3
And the bonus…
That's no conclusion - even by this cataclysmic comic's criteria, that's a cliffhanger!
