FYI, I would recommend a size Medium for those with a 40 inch chest measurement...note, I have the Levis Menlo, BR Peacoat and this jacket in a size Medium with no alternations needed.

I would agree with this. I wear a 40 and purchased a large due to some of what I had read. Sleeves were almost 2 inches too long and are having to be shortened by a tailor. Otherwise I am happy with the jacket.

Are you using your personal tailor or will you be using Barbour for this? I ask because Barbour recommends that the jacket be "reproofed" with wax after any alterations.

Amazing how quickly the Commander jacket sold out at J Crew.

    Sizing
For your information. I have had a ToKiTo size large for quite some time and have worn it many many times. I decided to go hunting for a commander i got a call from Barbour to say that my reserved commander had arrived. After trying it on i can categorically say that the Commander has more room in the shoulders and chest and the arms are longer. I was a little surprised as i had read many comments that they were the same fitting ad the ToKiTo this is not true the commander is roomier which is actually fine with me as now i can where a thicker jumper/sweater underneath.

I have two Commanders now and have had the original for about two years with a replacement for it earlier this year as it was worn to bits. Both Commanders and Toki's are exactly the same fit and dimensions with mine. Mediums all.

It's not a case of disagreement between us. It's a case on inconsistency with the newer commander, or even latest batches.

sure i agree, but to be honest im happy that the one i bought fits a little larger then my tokito

In case anyone's looking for the Commander in Canada, Sporting Life has the best price I've seen so far on sale at $599: http://www.sportinglife.ca/sportinglife/product/24055121/Coats/Men's-'skyfall'-Wax-Heritage-Jacket

Unfortunately, I found the sale right after ordering through J Crew's 25% off sale. This would've been a bit cheaper as Sporting Life also offers free shipping in Canada. Haven't received my jacket yet, but getting anxious...

If you're in Toronto, Stollery's at the corner of Yonge and Bloor has the Commander in their front window. They have a huge Barbour section, but I believe that they never include it in any of the sales or promotions that they do.

Just found it on their online store. It's regularly $1,075, but currently on sale for $752.50. They currently have every size except XXL.

Dipped my toe today, got an XL Commander here in the UK, ordered online yesterday from Aspecto with a very welcome 20% discount. Never tried one or the Tokito, but the discount forced my hand.

Picked it up today and I love it. The asking price is towards the very top of what I can afford to pay for clothing, but after trying on at home several times, I told myself it was well worth it. And if something is pricey, I tend to look after them more.

I would regard myself as a stocky 42.5 inch chest and the XL fits really well, you can definately feel the tailored width notably in the arm pits, but other than that I couldn't be happier. As has been noted elsewhere in this thread, the arms are a tad longer than I would prefer. I prefer the fit of this over my my XL Duke. Tried the 2XL but would've regretted it.

Anyone looking for the Commander jacket; Aspecto have it on their website (Aspecto.co.uk) in their Xmas sale @25% off! They've also got it in Navy but only 20% off.
Got mine from them earlier this year, good service, spoke to them on the phone before ordering, very helpful.
Merry Christmas to all ajb members!

The End doesn't ship Barbour jackets outside of EU, when did they change that? Do any UK sites ship to USA?

I bought this jacket in navy initially in small and the body was a little tight. I returned it and got a medium and although the body is spot on the sleeves are about 2-3 inches too long. I took it to the Barbour factory and they say there is nothing they can do.

Haa anyone had this same problem and took it to an independent tailor to have altered? If so how does it look? I'm worried nothing can be done because of the leather cuff trim and the leather on the outside of the forearm and elbow.

Any advice or feedback would be appreciated

    Thanks

My tailor shortened the sleeves of my To Ki To and did an excellent job - I believe some tapering was involved, and he kept everything intact . (I'd post pics but it's at the tailor's again this week, as I'm 50 lbs lighter than when I bought the thing...)

    Hi there,

I haven't logged in on here for a couple of years, but I had to when I read your comments. I was shocked that Barbour had told you that. I sent my Commander directly to Barbour, after printing and filling in the online alterations form. I just chose the sleeve length option and asked for them to be shortened by 5cm (I think). I sent a cheque along with the jacket and a month or so later it came back with shortened sleeves, with the leather trim to the cuffs. I'm very happy with the work, and it has really allowed me to actually wear the jacket now the sleeves aren't draping over the ends of my hands. Anyway, hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Mark.

Thanks Mark. In all honesty I was astonished myself when the guy at the desk at the Barbour factory said that. I might go back and ask again because I wasn't convinced by what he said. I even took the time to ring Barbour before and they said it should be okay. To make a jacket that cannot be altered by the people that design it is absolutely crazy in my eyes!?

Cheers for letting me know your experience, I don't think I'm gonna let this one go

Take a look at this store return form and look at item 3 on the list:

    BarbourReturnForm_zps7abd2ed6.jpg

You'll clearly see that sleeve lengthening or shortening is an option given by Barbour, so I'd definitely chase this up. And the form isn't an old one - you can see the date when I took my Tokihito in to be re-proofed as being 4 days ago.

Hope you get a better answer armed with this.

I love the fact that re-proofing the jacket costs more than anything other than "Large repair to inner lining" and "Large repair to front/back of jacket." Having twice re-proofed jackets myself, I can certainly sympathise!

That's precisely why I sent it off to have it done properly - once I've bought the wax, boiled the water, got an old rag and then ruined SWMBO's hairdryer, it's not worth me doing it myself.

Factor in that it's one of their rarest and highest priced jackets, I'm not taking the chance.
