Topic: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

...And for some reason I thought it was the name for Bond 23 because it sort of sounds like a take-off of The Man with the Golden Gun.

There's a book called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Is it any good? Or is it like Stephanie Meyer's Twilight novels?

I haven't read it yet, but it's a MAJOR bestseller that has gotten excellent reviews.  In fact one film version has already been made in Europe.  It's the first of a trilogy, so Craigger has another movie franchise on his hands!

Welcome to AJB, by the way   ajb007/cheers

One of the best novels I have read (I've read all 3) - it's the first of The Millenium Trilogy - The Girl with the dragon tattoo, The girl who played with fire, and The Girl who Kicked a hornets Nest.

If you haven't read these - then I suggest you do.

Superb ajb007/martini

(And all three movies have been made in Sweden, staring Michael Nyqvist, who plays the protagonist Mikael Blomkvist and Noomi Rapace who plays Lisbeth Salander) - I did post about it here

It looks like Hollywood deemed it necessary to re-make it into an English version - staring Daniel ajb007/heart

I would have said this was unnecessary, as the originals are all great films, however - I must admit, if I hadn't have read the books - I would have never have understood what was going on in the movies..... so it will be interesting to see if the Hollywood version(s) turns them into more 'stand alone' versions.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I agree with Lexi, they are superb books, amongst the best I have read over the past 5 years or so. I have seen the first two original films and thought the first was excellent while the second disappointed a bit (but was still good). I really don't think it's necessary to remake the Swedish originals as they are brilliantly acted, beautifully shot and just damn good films...but I know that not everyone's into subtitles. Craig's casting will work well I believe, but ultimately I think one of the things that made "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (book and film) as good as it was was its grittiness. I hope Hollywood doesn't wimp out and soften a nasty story unnecessarily.

The quality of a remake is always a crap-shoot. Nine times out of ten you'll end up with a bad remake by directors who don't give a poo but sometimes you end up with a good remake like Insomnia (2002) 3:10 to Yuma (2007) The Manchurian Candidate (2004) and True Grit (2010)

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl With The Dragoon Tattoo has been made as a Swedish language film, and holds the record (I believe) for box office takings in the UK for a foreign language film and DVD sales.  Was a big hit here, as was the second in the trilogy The Girl Who Played With Fire.  Both very good films (the first, excellent).  Why Hollywood feels the need to strip it of it's native language, setting and actors, who knows.  And I won't be watching it to find out.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Well, well, well... [/rubs hands with glee ajb007/lol]

Allow me to be the voice of dissent and say that I found TGWTDT to be a terrible and massively overrated film. I know people are usually wary of Hollywood remakes, but I think in this case it can only be improved by adding some actual dialogue and making the resolution less risibly cliched (okay okay, the last one you're unlikely to find in a Hollywood film but 1 out of 2 ain't bad ajb007/biggrin).

I wish Craig all the best with the movie(s) of course, but if he's playing Nyqvist's milquetoast character I have a sneaky feeling this will not turn out to be one of his better outings. The remake itself certainly won't have the impact of the original, and it makes me wonder why Hollywood is bothering at all. Especially since Let Me In --the most recent remake of a hit Swedish film-- was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it affair.

Oh well, on it goes in La-La Land I guess ajb007/rolleyes

Saw this article on this here

I just hate the bit where they say they are changing the ending..... why?

The ending was good enough - why change it? Humph......

These books are bloody brilliant. Plots within plots, twists and turns. Fantastic stuff. Lisbeth Salander is one of the best charecters invented.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The original Millenium Trilogy films are thrilling. Lisbeth Salander is played by Rooney Mara, who played Zuckerbergs girlfriend at the start of Social Network, in the US version. The poster looks great.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

It seems like we have some Yank bashing on this thread lol. For all of Hollywoods faults AND there are many, if it was not for the American audience we would not have had 23 Bond films played by 6 different actors .  I guess the point I am trying to make is there are some benefits to watering things down for mass consumption.  Even if that means sacrificing some artistic integrity ( In hollywoods case ALOT of sacrificing )

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

If I'm not mistaken,Christopher Nolan is the director and we know his track record, so that would bode well. And here's a little wishful thinking. Christopher Nolan: huge Bond fan; admits his films are highly influenced by Bond films; enjoyed working with Daniel Craig; has stated he'd love to do a Bond film.....Christopher Nolan signs on to write/direct Bond 24? Not likely, but it would be nice.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

David Fincher is directing, but Nolan and Fincher do have closely related styles. Both great film makers with a dark edge. Nolan did indeed say inception was partly inspired by bond AND I agree he would be a great choice to direct 24.

Not so much bashing, as just coming along and changing the ending of what is one of the best selling trilogies of the last 3 years..... why do that.... give what people want... give what the fans want.... and when you're making a movie from a book - rather than a stand alone movie, with no reference... it's just really annoying when they mess with a winning formula.

However, having said that, the origional films did chop and change with a major plot point, so I can't be too harsh ajb007/lol

Thanks for the correction.....I always seem to get Nolan and Fincher mixed up. I'd take either one to direct a Bond film.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Interestingly, the origional title of The girl with the dragon tatoo can be translated to Men who hate women. Perhaps not very Bondian?

There is a new Scandinavian crime novel star now: Jo Nesbo. He is Norwegian and his books are selling very well abroad, invluding the US. The books will be made into hollywood prodctutions, something Nesbo only allowed when he was offered to be one of the producers. Comes highly recomended!

Ooooh, now that looks fantastic.... wanted to use another F word before it.... but being a family site an' all.... ajb007/embarrassed

Just those snippets alone, show more detail than the original.... wow, looks like this re-make is going to be good.

Although, there are a few scenes, that Daniel mentions, I think that could be quite hard core.... more squirm in your seat... than anything else. But still - can't wait for this to come to the cinema.... thanks for posting ajb007/martini

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

We are entering new territory here, as Craig will be the first actor to play Bond whose profile could equal,or even eclipse Bond even while he is still playing him !
Ok he has had the benefit of long gaps between missions, but he has really made some smart looking choices. He certainly has seemed to capture the imagination of the public. Have you noticed how he has in some sense re- defined the model of masculinity, in a similar way that Connery did. There seem to be 'Craigalikes' in every fashion shoot and media. Image.

Re: Daniel Craig is in a new movie called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Sorry, I must be missing something. Craig has made some smart choices  and will eclipse Bond.  ajb007/rolleyes

Could anyone name another film he's made that has had a Huge boxoffice success
For such a serious actor ( slaps Thighs ) he's made some crap
C&A, Tin Tin, the golden compass, I'd say he's going for popularity( these arn't serious parts, just Popcorn movies ) and the big Bucks rather than any Deep meaningful roles. I can imagine the derision directed at Brosnan if he'd done it during his Tenure.
apart from QOS i don't think Craig's  done an Arthouse movie  ajb007/lol
If he's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Popular, why do so many women stay away from his Movies, Along with men Obviously. Both straight and gay.
Like Many of the Others who've Played Bond , I think you'll find.
It's BOND that makes them a Star, Not the other way Round. It's the same when an Actor leaves a Soap, They are Big stars when they are in it But nobodies when they leave.
Connery had very little success in the 70's, Lazenby disapeared. Moore basicly retired, and Dalton went back to the theater. Even Brosnan is finding it had to find success without Bond.
I know I'm not going to make many friends But, I really think alot of people here at AJB are really Craig fans first, and Bond second.  ajb007/lol
He's just like any other actor, " I'm really a serious actor, Deep roles are what I'm after " then as soon as a Big wage packet comes in, they suddenly can't get enough of the popcorn, big budget movies  and " I need to know my cut of the Toys and DVD sales "  ajb007/lol
But I've said my piece and will wait for all the Craig ( Bromance) fans to come to his Defence. I know not many will back me up as Others who criticise "The great Actor" have discovered.  ajb007/wink
