Goldeneye: 10 Years Old?

JennyFlexFanJennyFlexFan Posts: 1,497MI6 Agent
Next year, Goldeneye 007 for the N64 turns 10 YEARS OLD! It's crazy to think, since I still remember playing it when it was brand new and "hot off the presses". And I still play it to this day! I never once thought of a game I played being so old, not that there's anything wrong with that.

It just goes to show that the great Goldeneye can withstand the test of time! It actually kept on selling until 2004, so well into its 7th birthday, people couldn't resist it.

Is anyone else shocked by this that next year, this beloved game will be a decade old?

Goldeneye 007 is the father of console FPS, might be the best Bond game Ever, teach how to make a multiplayer game, shows physics, graphics over the time, back then was perfect, even today, but lets be honest, 007 is way better than other games, but no game will succeed if they ignore the present (a la Goldeneye Rouge Agent or FRWL)

Long live Goldeneye 007, 10 years and i haven`t finished once

Goldeneye and the original Turok game were the reasons I picked up my N64 all those years ago. Those two games were, in my opinion, the high points for the console ( sorry Mario :p ) although the last couple of levels in Goldeneye were infuriatingly hard and cheap.

Still, I have to say that for me EA's Everything or Nothing was a superior game. In addition to having some great 3rd person action with very unique play mechanics like rappeling down walls, the driving levels were a ton of fun and overall you had a lot of different things to do and try. In contrast, Goldeneye was a 100% first person shooter and it did get a little repetitive by the end of the game.

EOM is probably the best Bond game for a long time, but it doesn`t mean or represent the same as GoldenEye 007. is just not a FPS... is the first FPS (or at least the one that everyone will remember) i honestly haven`t played turok 1 once, but i understand that didn`t have multiplayer.

Goldeneye was the first high profile Bond game; Nintendo really promoted it well. The developers of the game, Rare, gained considerable noteriety because of it. It was definitely a great FPS and introduced a lot of new elements to the genre. It was also one of the first FPS's for the Nintendo64 to have a very good multiplayer component to it.

I believe that none of the Turok games had any multiplayer modes; single player only. The original is still the best of the lot in my opinion, with some of the most absurdly powerful weapons ever put in a video game and an absolutely huge world to explore.

Goldeneye is not only my favourite Bond game. It is also my favourite game of all time. I stll play it now from time to time.

When it was first released, my friends and I would get together for a 'Snipe Off' once a week involving beer, Pizza and of course, Goldeneye.
We still have the occasional nostalgic 'Snipe Off' now!

It was and still is the best multi-player game that I have played IMO.

I love Goldeneye on the N64 as well, what a game!! It is my favourite game of all time as I have always loved 1st person shooters and bond.

Me and 5 mates used to play this every Monday night on the deathmatch mode, with the 2 last players going out each time and the 2 new players coming in.

I used to play Goldeneye all the time and completed ALL the levels (and both bonus levels)and collected ALL the cheats of each level. It took me months to do but in the end it was probably the first game I had TOTALLY completed.

I would still play it now with my mates but to be honest they all got pi**ed off with me as I always used to beat them on the deathmatches, so the refused to play me anymore!!

Anyone else finish the game with all the cheats?

Yeah, I did it. It took me 3 years in all!! Well worth it though. I've started it again from scratch after reading this thread. Hopefully it won't take me 3 years this time round 8-)

Which cheat did you find the most difficult to get? I probably spend most time on the statue level as it really depended on where the black box appeared.

I think it was getting the silver pp7. You had to finish the archives level on 00 agent setting in 1 minute 20. I remember spending absolutely ages trying to do that one!

Goldeneye is the BEST Bond game ever. It was a groundbreaking FPS at the time, and it was just plain fun! GREAT unlockables that made the game all the more enjoyable.
I can think of some great memories playing this game with friends if you guys wanna hear them. ;)

i agree that goldeneye64 is one of the best bond games ever! my second favourite bond game being Nightfire. Am i right in thinking that GoldenEye 64 was around £70 to buy brand new when it was first released? unfortunatly i never owned an N64 when it was first popular, i invested in one when they were going out of fashion and goldeneye was the first game i bought for it (well i say bought, i got the n64 for £39 and GAME threw in goldeneye for free B-) )

Probably the best Game ever, only Half Life can compare. The amount of time spent playing that was ridiculous. Even once you had completed it all, you could still try for the records on how quickly to complete each mission. I remember taking my n64 to school and everyone alternate after deaths, was fun because I would rarely be killed. I am way too used to a mouse and keyboard these days.

It looks like there's a chance Goldeneye for the old N64 might actually make an appearance on the Nintendo Wii via its virtual console emulator. Have a look:

A chance, yeah, but it sounds like a slim one. I have yet to see a Wii in action, so I'm not sure if I'm ready to make the next step from my GameCube. However, A GoldenEye game may seal the deal!

That would be brilliant. I'd buy one just for that tbh. I will have to test the Wii out though, i'm a little sceptical of this controller thing.

Yeah, sounds like WAY to much work. I work hard so I can be a couch potato at home. Besides, I see myself getting out of control and breaking a lamp or something. The Missus would kill me!

oohhh goldeneye has to be my all time best! i rememeber i would like come home after school and slap on the game to play for hours hahah. i still haven't ended it, well i dont have the bonus stages, just that the cradle on double agent 00 is soo damn hard and fast. err i want those bonus levels, its been like 1998 that i have gotten it...errr...but i love playing the multiplayer mode with my friends, SLAPPERS ONLY!!

Lost count of the times I completed it. People at school used to give me their copies to complete for them. Ended up having to try and beat the fastest completion time of each level even after completing all the cheat times. Was obsessed with it.

I remember owning Goldeneye 007 before I sold my N64 for a game cube. It was the best N64 game I had. I had no idea it was a decade old. I thought It was older. :p {[] Definitely the best game for N64.

I'll never forget GoldenEye on the N64. I spent many hours playing the game when I was younger... It's just a shame my brother got rid of the N64 and all his games years ago!

I though GoldenEye 007 was truly groundbreaking abd was the one example of a videogame that was vastly better than the movie it was based on - Perfect Dark was nearly as good as well.

Goldeneye is certainly the best game ever, beating EoN by a nose. My fondest memory of it was when me and my brothers were playing the Caverns(I was 5 at the time), and Daniel was going up that spiral hill halfway through the level (You know the one). He was running through and I was like "Wait, Use the AR33, aim up there!" and we sniped a guard to death with the AR33. It was awesome.

I also can't believe that this game is now over a decade old. I received mine ten years ago this April. Some of my best childhood memories are playing this timeless game with almost all of my friends. Shame I only have a handful of friends who still enjoy it. It truly is one of the best FPS game ever, one of the best N64 games ever, and the best 007 game ever made.

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I finally "beat it completely" last summer. I beat Dam through Cradle on 00 Agent back in 98, but did not get around to beating Aztec on Secret Agent until last summer. That gave me so much confidence I beat it on 00 Agent soon after and coasted through the Egyptian Temple. All I have left to do is get a few time cheats. I have the hardest already (Invincible, Invisible, etc.). Those two are actually not the hardest, contrary to what most say. I always thought beating Facility in under 2:05 was crazy, but after seeing an internet video 2 years ago I finished it as quick as 1:40 something I believe.

Someone told me that Rare might be adding it as a re release to XBL.

Haven't heard anything more concrete than that.

If they do, I wonder if anything would be updated, like the graphics...

From what I'd read, it was all but a done deal and the game would have featured upgraded visuals; there was even talk that it would be done using Valve's Source engine which would support hi-def resolutions. MS was even offering to port Goldeneye and other XBL games to Nintendo's Virtual Console.

Ultimately however sources within Microsoft stated that Nintendo exec Satoru Iwata supposedly quashed the whole project because he didn't feel Nintendo software should ever appear on competing consoles.

I read all this a few weeks ago; haven't heard anything since so it looks like the game may be dead.

Here's the petition to get them to reconsider, i know these things aren't the most successful, but it's worth a try. In a few weeks it's almost gained 20,000 sigantures.
