Better Pics of Turnbull and Asser Shirt

The Bond ExperienceThe Bond Experience Newtown, PAPosts: 5,490Quartermasters
Thought some of you might want to see better pics of this $450 collectable.....The bow tie is made of black shantung silk. It has been pre-tied for
the box display (it has an adjustable clip in the back), but you may
un-do it yourself and tie it to your liking. The shirt is made from a
Superfine cloth in a white basket-weave pattern. It has a covered
placket and double cuffs (French cuffs).

Nice piece. Wish I could justify spending money like that.

Interesting that for most of us it's a collectible but I'm not entirely sure T&A see it that way; the clerks seemed slightly dismayed when I declined to try mine on! On the other hand, they made a point of mentioning more than once that the sets are serialized (a "limited collection" [their term] of 5K--which still seems pretty sizable to me--but are mostly sold-out in Beverly Hills which [per another thread] was supposed to be better stocked than London, for example) ... or maybe they just didn't know what else to say to somone who clearly wasn't buying it to wear.
Nice piece. Wish I could justify spending money like that.

Given that CR isn't generating much branded merchandise, you could be saving money by comparison to all the memorabilia issued for DAD!

Seriously, I'm obviously a pretty hardcore collector so I'm clearly biased, but this is one of the few things* connected with the film I think is worth having. Again, it is one of those items that is being sold as a collectible so I doubt it's ever going to appreciate much. Some folks have posted that the branding actually ruins the shirt--which it probably does from a "lifestyles of the rich and famous" perspective--but it is that branding that should preclude it losing value ... provided none of us wear them, of course!

Unless you're shopping exclusively at ASDA, what with the current exchange rate, US$ 45 for a shirt is a bargain!

Mantis didn't comment on the box (which, having spent years designing consumer packaging, is almost more interesting to me [spot varnish on matte anything is just so cool ... bonus points to anyone who has any clue what I'm talking about]) that includes a special A4 print of the CR poster mounted inside the lid.

*The other has to be playing cards and poker chips ... cheap and ubiquitous but iconic.

And for those that feel the shirt is spoiled by the branding (and who just want to own & wear a really nice dress shirt like Craig's) T&A will happily run you one up in the same material, sans branding or packaging, at a cheaper price.

Personally. I'd go for a pair of the "Goldenshorts" worn in the James Bond logo.

That label is horrific- all those fonts!

Got to say I really hate that 'James Bond' logotype- very dated.

I wish they would come out with the other T&A shirts he wore in the film: on the train and he arrived in Montenegro. I have a few T&A shirts in my wardrobe, and they are some of the best shirts I've ever owned. I do wear the tie Brosnan wore in DAD during the VR sequence, great tie.

Pretty typical of a shirt label bearing three distinct logotypes really; not alot you can do with machine embroidery! The collateral works better: There's more area and a broader palette plus some opportunity to vary the point sizes.

I'm not quite sure what EON is doing. For decades, the only particular branding of Bond was through the "gun logo. Then in the Brosnan years they shift to Serpentine for all titles while loosening up on the logo (several versions in use simultaneously, including one minus the barrel for children's products). Now we're back to the tradtional logo, a unqiue font for the title (though whether that continues remains to be seen), and Serpentine--which I don't think is dated so much as simply awkwardly designed--just for "James Bond." While I don't know that a "corporate identity" was needed for the franchise, I can certainly understand why they did it. But as I've already noted elsehwhere, they've now dropped the blue-hued packaging scheme, too (again, not necessarily a favorite but it was nice to see consistency) in favor of red so perhaps it's back to chaos theory ...

You can do anything you want with machine embroidery- not sure what you mean. They've used five different fonts (if you include the 007 logo) to say four statements- no matter how you look at it, that's a mess. At the very least they could have used one of the existing fonts to say 'LIMITED EDITION' to at least try and tie the thing together. Even better; just have T&A and the CR logo to try and have some element of classiness.

I know what you mean- it really needs some decent design work. This version of the 007 logo is looking a little tired ten years in (and for DAD it even kept losing its gun in some forms!) and the blue stuff was nasty. Such a shame they've just updated the rubbish old silhouette with a picture of Daniel, rather than rethinking it. And who stuck that bow tie on?! Terrible!

That's a bit steep for a tie that usually sells for $140.00 or so.

It's his actual tie though. Looks horrible tbh.

Just spoke with the Manager of the T&A store in Bev Hills. I live in San Francisco. I sent him a pic of Daniel Craig from the Persol site, and inquired about the shirt and tie. He told me Turnbull & Asser only did the formal shirt and black tie. The rest was Brioni. That is a bummer.

There are emphatic limitations on fonts/sizes, etc. in machine embroidery. If the license permited (I'll bet corporate attorneys for both sides agreed everything had to be the same scale), they might have mixed it up bit ... but only to the extent the equipment allowed. (I've spec'd alot of embroidery over the years ... and been forced to sacrifice what could have been some better designs because of it.)
Even better; just have T&A and the CR logo to try and have some element of classiness.

Most of that would be dictated by the license. And again, it's meant as a record of information/authenticity, not a work of art; to me it's typical of garment labeling where there are multiple brands. If it was meant to be visible when worn it would be a completely different matter; I look at the Bond Omegas and think, "Wow, they completely ruined a perfectly good watch" because there's not even the slightest attempt at integrating the logo. As the other poster implied, if you want class, buy one that's not branded.
And who stuck that bow tie on?! Terrible!

I would assume that's all T&A art; I haven't seen it anywhere else. Given what they're packaging, stands to reason the tie would be defined.

How is the quality of the shirt in comparison with a Brioni shirt? I owned a couple of Brioni's but I am really interested on getting my hands on one of this for my wedding..

I agree that the design of the label isn't that crash hot. I wish they would get away from all this generic looking packaging. Why don't they get designers to come up with some more inspired ideas. I love the box artwork on some of the 1960's Bond items and this would have looked an even better product in a decent box.

Very nice. Hey Mantis, when's the 2nd part of your Casino Royale On A Budget article being posted?.....Part 1 was great stuff
    Never fear the event

gonzalc3, I have this shirt and have worn it twice (once to a 007 party at New year and recently to a wedding) on both occasions I have received numerous compliments on the shirt but aside from that it just feels nice.

I also splurged on the St Dupont Cufflinks and Geives & Hawkes braces which compliment it nicely
  • s96024s96024 Posts: 1,519MI6 Agent
Those cufflinks were very expensive. I bet that looks well smart.
  • sruzgarsruzgar Welcome to ScotlandPosts: 1,468MI6 Agent
$245 which is about 120 quid, not to bad for some sharp cufflinks that you will have forever.

    Thanks sruzgar!
I actually want to buy the braces from Gieves and Hawkes, and the cufflinks. I am not sure if on the cufflinks I will be getting the ones from St. Duppont since I haven't found them anywhere. On the tuxedo, unless I find a nice deal on it, I plan to get a Zegna which has the same cut as the Brioni. The main difference is in the material that they use in the collar and the line in the pants.

I thought when I saw them they were considerbaly more expensive. True that is not actually too bad a price.

Couldn't find anywhere to get them in the UK.

Hi guys. I want to buy the shirt, but how do I go about it? I looked all over the internet, including Turnbull's site and I cannot find it anywhere for sale. Is it sold out? or do I have to call them? I am in the midwest of the United States by the way. Thanks!
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,485MI6 Agent
Unfortunately I think they are sold out, the Jermyn St store had a few left at the end of January, but I havn't seen them on the shelves since then. There was one on ebay that was unsold, I'll try to find the link and send it to you. The seller may be open to offers.
