CR just isn't a film that holds my interest the same way GE does.

I guess CR's realism is part of the reason why I'm not crazy about it. Although LtK is quite realistic and I like it much more.

Objectively it may be one of the best Bond films, but to me it generally feels more like a side dish than a main course as far as Bond films go.

GE, on the other hand, feels like a main course.

CR doesn't have enough realism for me. The plot is realistic, but Bond himself just doesn't seem realistic at all to me in that film. When Bond is unrealistic, I like him to be more absurd, like with the ridiculous plane diving stunt in GE.

I understand what you mean, I typically enjoy the more "absurd" Bonds than the ones which try to be really grounded. I really enjoy the absurd stunts because most of the time anyway - they're done for real.

But I am unsure what you meant about Bond not being realistic in CR?? Craig smashes out of the park a realistic portrayal of Bond...

My problems with Bond not being believable in Casino Royale are partially from Daniel Craig's acting and partially from how the character is written. I don't find Craig's portrayal of Bond believable in Casino Royale. He's too machine-like in the action scenes and shows no emotion, no fear. He also has no chemistry with Vesper, and I don't find the romance convincing. I don't feel like Bond was actually in love with Vesper from the film, despite the dialogue. And I hate that the film tries to show how Bond becomes Bond, in his personality and tastes. Nobody changes that much at the age of 38. To believe that is absurd. Bond would have developed his character in his 20s, not through one mission at the age of 38. People say how Craig's Bond is so close to Fleming's Bond, and they do share some similarities, but to me the Bond of Casino Royale the film is considerably different from the Bond of the book. Dalton comes much closer to being the Bond of the book and having the most realistic portrayal.

Personally I find the romance with Vesper forced as well, I don't believe they're in love - it's all very staged for the point of narrative acceleration. The romance with Solange was great, because I believed that he actually wanted to have a good F with her, even though he never did! X-(

With your other reasons I find it quite easy to suspend-disbelief in quite a few situations to understand this Bond as being rough around the edges and machine-like. Not being a 00 yet etc. Never really thought of the 38 thing, to me he's playing someone younger.

Overall I have not yet warmed to the Craig Bond and the re-boot, but CR IMO is already a classic Bond film.

I feel that so far, this era has gone mostly too far in the opposite end of the spectrum from Moore... BUT I did love QOS a whole lot.
I have yet to see SPECTRE.
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

My overall opinion of the Craig Era is that they've experimented with some success, but they've given us a Bond who I don't quite get.

With Dalton you easily got what he was about. He was dark, he was intense, and he could also deliver on the humor.

Brozzer was a charmer, with some coldness and humor thrown in.

Moore was a mix of humor, elegance, and coldness. He could be both sophisticated and brutal.

Connery was an alpha male who clearly made his presence felt when he was at his best. Equally skilled at fighting and bedding the ladies.

But Craig I don't fully get. Is he cold? Emotional? Gritty? Charming?

I don't fully blame Craig, as I'm sure he's a solid actor (though I haven't seen that many movies with him).

I've yet to see SP, which I will do soon, but I'm not sure how much I'll like it.

    Bang on.

I hope SP and further releases will ease his Bond being a little bit more identifiable as the great blend of characteristics you mentioned with the others than a rugged, unlikeable, sad-sack loner.

Hadn't seen both the films in more than 3 years. Had great memories of GE (awesome background score, PTS, car and tank chases, French Riveria, etc.) and rated it as among my fav B-) .... while CR introduced Craig perfectly

Recently, re-visited both of them and found that - GE has lost its appeal slightly (though the PTS was still impressive, along with the car and tank chase sequences, however the other parts can look tedious at times), while CR has held up nicely (esp. till the torture scene which for some reasons looks funny now "scratch my ....") .... So my vote goes to CR

    Of the 007 films, I find that all of the 60s films have held up superbly, along with many films from 70s and 80s .... Post 80s, the films have looked great at their release, at times even giving the impression of out-doing some of the earlier Bond films, but as time passes, they began to fade while the older films continue to impress -{

I do think the dialogue was handled more tightly in GE than in CR.

Unpopular opinion for sure, but with GE I feel Campbell took the effort to make each line memorable. I can quote GE again and again, know quite a few of the lines by heart, whereas with CR I feel Campbell didn't put in as much effort in that regard. I don't find CR quite as quotable as GE.

CR is probably a much more popular film around here, so that opinion might not be popular, but it's my opinion.
