The Walther PPk was Fleming's choice after Geoffrey Boothroyd suggested the Beretta 418 pistol was a Ladies gun which was Fleming's choice in his first two novels. It was a natural progression that the PP/PPk would be adopted by Bond for his big screen debut and its stuck. Other weapons have been considered and rejected over the last half century.

The walther PPK is not a gun that anyone person in bond's role whould use.
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,485MI6 Agent
Actually, I'd disagree with that. The PPK is still in use within UK SF. Particularly SRR.

Having it as an optional "backup" gun is not the same. There is NO force in the world that uses this gun as their main weapon. I love the gun, own one, but there are much better choices on the market for regular daily duty and backup.
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,485MI6 Agent
Not only as backup, but as their primary sidearm too when the situation calls for it. You are very wrong on that account.

Bond is a fictional agent doing things that don't happen in the real world. MI6 personel don't even carry sidearms. So it's a moot point anyway.

For what its worth I am glad the PPK is used in the latest films.
I thing Craigs bond is about a deadly killer with style who is very good at what he does whether its a pee shooter or desert eagle it doesn't matter so therefore why not use an aesthetically pleasing gun, he drives a DB5 not the most powerful or best performing cars but like the PPK lovely to look at and a lot of bond history.
I like that this is bonds choice of weapon and its not getting rehashed with every film.
I am sure there are lots of tactical reasons for this and that but we would all be in shock if bond was running around in worn out trainers (far more functional for running but just not bond).
    Anyway just another opinion.
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,485MI6 Agent
And that is exactly why this new PPK/S jobby goes against what Bond using the PPK is all about. It's turned a beautiful gun into a fugly lump. Hehehe, it's the Bondtoys of the pistol world.

I do agree with the new gadgety ppk. No need and made a lovely looking gun ugly.
    Should have left it alone.

Maybe you can find some obscure police force somewhere, but not in any major force. Or let's say as a percentage of guns being used it must be very small.

Just like using an Aston Martin....

Like I said, British SRR (formerly 14 Company or Det) still use them. That's far from a small police force and does the real job Bond is supposed to do within the UK and abroad, but in more of a surveillance oriented role. The Regiment and SBS also use them when operational requirements dictate the use of a small concealable sidearm over a full service short. No doubt the Increment use them in the same role as they are formed of serving members of SRR, SBS and SAS. But the latter is not confirmed.
