Again I love how the team back home in the office are drawn directly into the dangerous moment... but it's Vesper who saves Bond's life.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

Classic David Arnold suspense motif as Bond nears cardiac arrest...very reminiscent of the pipeline scene in TWINE and several other as well.

Yes, such a great scene—very tense!

Such a great line and delivered with a great smile,

It’s about the writing coupled with the delivery, but Mr Wright is superb.
He and Craig create one of those “click” moments where both men know
they have met someone who is going to be a good friend. One of the few things
    QoS follows up on well.

    Agreed. Instant friendship/mutual respect.

Le Chiffre and Dart Vader are the two best known atsthmatic screen villans

"That last hand nearly killed me" was a great tension relieving moment...I felt the ripples of relief and laughter going around the cinema.

Machine that chimes bing... Vesper’s mobile. Twice.
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

It's a myth that there's no humor in CR. It's sparingly used, smart and deadpan.

Two Asian figures in the background earlier, one glimpsed with a cane... possibly an allusion to the hoods who attempted an assassination of Bond at the card table in the book.

I have very little interest in poker, but damn these scenes are thrilling to watch!

This is all very Fleming. The closest to a novel there had been in years. I loved it, seeing this for the first time.

The Grandhotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary which was used as the Hotel Splendide in this film recently made an appearance in the John Le Carre novel Agent Running in the Field...a very tenuous, but interesting link between the world of Bond and JLC.

    and it all lands perfectly.

So, how much did Bond just tip the croupier?

That chip isn't really worth anything in that situation … or at least that's what I've read.

I’m the same, it’s the suspense, tension and rivalry, all in an evocative setting that makes it work.
Add Arnold’s music.... simple straightforward and sharply memorable.

Bond and Vesper alone in a restaurant... similar in look and tone to a scene in 'Once Upon A Time In America' between DeNiro and Elizabeth McGovern (as I dimly recall)

"My friend Mathis"- he's just lying
  • Golrush007Golrush007 South AfricaPosts: 3,420Quartermasters
If I'm not mistaken the location for the car chase is the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, not far from where I lived at the time of filming.

    Very subtle, if so.

The scene where they pull up to the barges reminds me of Bond being taken to Tracy's father in OHMSS.

A brilliant stunt with the Aston! They did an amazing job.

Yes - and I don't like how Mathis's character is buffeted about in the ongoing confusion.

The torture scene. I genuinely thought that this would never be filmed.
  • Golrush007Golrush007 South AfricaPosts: 3,420Quartermasters
The first glimpse that I saw of the torture scene was a still in the book The Art of Bond by Laurent Bouzerau, that I glimpsed while flicking through that book in a Waterstones shop a couple of weeks before the film came out. I could scarcely believe that this scene was going to be translated to the screen in such a faithful manner.

The movie briefly dips into the torture-porn horror genre, as a way of bringing Fleming to the screen. Craig's humorous responses lighten the scene a little.

Book Bond can barely talk at this point. Film Bond cracks jokes.
