Could Brosnan Return?

edited March 2025 in Bond 26

Legacy sequels have been all the rage for a few years now and tend to bring back the original cast (Star Wars, Spider-Man and Jurassic World and more).

Amazon could do the same and make a one off film or TV series with Pierce. An Old Man Bond film or four episode series would be interesting.

What does everyone else think? Is it likely?

I like that idea. Brosnan could play the same Bond that he'd been before, brought out of retirement for some special reason that the writers can concoct.

Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

Brosnan could return, but he really shouldn't.

Halle Berry could cameo as Jinx. I can imagine Bond and, whoever his companion is in the film, having to visit her for guns etc and she's working freelance now with her whole apartment decked out with weapons. And then the bad guys turn up and she has to join in the fight.

I've had the same thought myself. His latest photo on Instagram shows he's still got the Bond aura and looks great for his age. I'd love to see him do another and get a proper send off. (As long as he isn't blown to bits)

That should never happen to Bond ever (again).

I would be somewhat open to a cameo, but Bond is escapism and timeless. He should never die, be old, or even retired (unless they look to do it indefinitely, which studio greed will never allow)

But Brosnan is the quintisential Bond handed less than great scripts or effects in his movies, he hands down should have done more. Still as debonair as ever

No thanks, don’t want old man Bond. Literally the last film we had was about a retired 007 coming back for one last mission, can’t keep doing that.

And are all the young ladies supposed to be swooning for this old guy? I feel like Bond films have done that enough.

You are all forgetting something - Hollywood's de-ageing process, as seen in that Scorcese film.

It's something I would not really appreciate. I'm a little bit fed up with all those 'legends' coming back for one last ride. I like Brosnan as Bond, but I think he should definitely stay the guy of the 90s/early 2000s.

And I don't want a cameo either. Each Bond should remain special, and I've never been keen on the idea of Dalton as M or something like that. I'm grateful Sean didn't play Kincaid in SF.

What would be the point? The only reason to have him back is if you want to explore the idea of an old Bond, but I think that's a bit of a naff idea. If you de-age him you've got a slightly unconvincing young Bond: just get a new actor.

Sorry, I like it when people come up with creative ideas but this one isn't for me.

  • DavidJonesDavidJones BermondseyPosts: 285MI6 Agent

I can definitely see it happening myself.

It’s “content”, after all, and adds a little bit of variety to the library, while falling in line with a current Hollywood trend and will get people talking.

Sure, why not? But not as Bond. With a little makeup you could disguise him a bit. Then you have your movies villain.

Why not? He's still in good shape, his acting has gotten better over the years and frankly he still pulls off the suave, debonair look better than anyone. Even at 70+ he still looks better than Connery in NSNA.

It would have to be a one off. Maybe being forced out of retirement to help a new 00 only to have to take the lead when his successor is killed or otherwise incapacitated. Could be fun.

Yeah, I'd much rather Amazon do slightly naff fan service like this than something as god-awful as a Moneypenny spin-off. Seeing Brosnan reprise the role in some bizarre alternate universe one-off would be admittedly fun to see, but it shouldn't be 'Bond 26' as such.

It's true that Craig's Bond, in Bond Continuity #B, came out of retirement only to be blown to bits. Bringing Brosnan's Bond out of retirement, in the (loose) Bond Continuity #A, could amount to a course correction if we see him survive his last mission and get the girl at the end - Jinx? - in time-honoured fashion (and a bit like at the end of NSNA, when Connery finally bowed out with a knowing wink). I don't think Jinx could sustain a mini-series on her own but a Brosnan/Berry reprise could remind a thirsty audience just how much fun Bond can be, paving the way for a later, proper relaunch with a new, age-appropriate Bond... I'm down for that!

The 'James Bond Will Return' caption at the end of NTTD would gain an unintended ironic meaning if the James Bond in question turned out, in the first instance, to be Brosnan himself, the very Bond displaced by Craig... the old-school Bond we knew and loved!

Cameos for Judi Dench, Samantha Bond, Colin Salmon, John Cleese? A joke or two about "the other fella"? (Judi Dench's Moneysuperseven ads indicate she still has some lighthearted affinity with her M role and could be up for this way back in.)

Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

Brosnan as James Bond in Bond26 would be sending the audience the wrong message. The message would be: we're backwards-looking, we couldn't find any young actors to play Bond and we're clearly an old man's movie series now.

  • Shady TreeShady Tree London, UKPosts: 3,138MI6 Agent

Never underestimate young people's sense of irony! But yes, I'm thinking more appetite-whetting miniseries rather than Bond 26 per se.

    Why not Dalton?

    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - OP, 4 - LTK, 5 - FYEO, 6 - DAF, 7 - TSWLM, 8 - NTTD, 9 - DN, 10 - GE, 11 - SF, 12 - OHMSS, 13 - TMWTGG, 14 - TLD, 15 - YOLT, 16 - MR, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TND, 20 - TWINE, 21 - SP, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 23,701MI6 Agent

No, I think more than enough time has past since NTTD. The first priority has to be Bond26! Then, when people, and especially young people, are into Bond again Amazon can start thinking of a very limited number of TV-series.

  • HarryCanyonHarryCanyon Posts: 799MI6 Agent

I don't want any of the surviving Bond actors to appear in any of the newer Amazon products. Make it clean, make it fresh. Don't put anything in there as a wink towards the legacy. Having Brosnan or Dalton in there might be 'fun' but it would be distracting.

  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 23,701MI6 Agent

I almost completely agree. I like a few subtle winks to the past, such as the hazmat suits in NTTD looking like the ones in DN.

Nothing against Dalton, but his era isn’t remembered in any way vividly by the general public while Brosnan’s era was more successful and high-profile, and Brosnan is still top-lining films. Bluntly, he’s more famous.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 6,822MI6 Agent

He is, but not more famous than James Bond. I don’t feel there’s any huge public desire to see him specifically as Bond again, people just want Bond.

  • JTBondJTBond Posts: 128MI6 Agent

Well, Pierce sounds open to the idea. But he's also realistic about the possibility of a return...

"I've heard of that. Of course, how could I not be interested? But it's a delicate situation now. I think it's best to let sleeping dogs lie, really. I think so. It's a rather romantic notion and idea, but I think everything changes, everything falls apart. I think that it's best left to another man, really. Fresh blood."

Thanks for posting that - it completely passed me by. It's good to know enough people are talking about it.

So he admits to being interested and then sort of talks himself out of it? A little mixed messaging there. He may be trying to keep a level head about it.

Wouldn't it be weird if he had privately made peace with being let go (as well he might after all this time) only for him to be asked back?

Also: can someone tell me where that picture on Screen Rant is from? I can't place it.

  • JTBondJTBond Posts: 128MI6 Agent

I interpret it as....he would definitely do it, but he knows the chances of being asked back are almost zero.

  • DavidJonesDavidJones BermondseyPosts: 285MI6 Agent

We will have to see. I think the chances are pretty good to fair, but then I understand what someone else has said that people want Bond, the character. Basically, I think they might as well make it. There's as much justification as any of the other casts-return/legacy sequels stuff that's happened.

I think it'd be a fun idea. It solves a few problems, or at least kicks them further down the road. For one, there would be no confusion following NTTD... this would obviously be the continuation of the "Brosnan Bond" timeline. It would also hold off any skepticism about how amazon might handle the casting by returning to a known quantity and someone largely well regarded amongst Bond fans. It would also be a way for amazon to build up some good will with a likely one-off before choosing a proper new Bond.
