Much touted Italian art house movie in which a 65-year-old journalist, who published a single, classic novel some decades ago, catches up with his life which consists of attending various hedonistic rooftop parties in which all manner of frenzied, co-ordinated dancing and coke snorting goes on. I suppose it's a kind of Really Wild Strawberries in which he has flashbacks to his youthful promise.
The visuals are terrific and you think, wow, if only a Bond film could have a flash of this. It might be a more shallow film than you'd like ultimately, but just for something different, I'd give it high marks. The lead actor has a wonderfully doleful, craggy face as he meets life's disappointment head on. Great classical sounding soundtrack too and marvellous shots of Rome.

I saw The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at a preview screening, and enjoyed it very much. Like the first Hobbit film, it never reaches the brilliance of the Lord of the Rings trilogy but it is still certainly a better film than almost any of the other blockbusters we have seen this year. There are weaknesses for sure, but the cinematic experience as a whole was one of the most satisfying of this year. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger which left we wishing I could fastforward a year and see the last part of the tale. I guess I will have to be patient though.
I'd like to see an abridged movie of The Hobbit which ties together the three films into one, but three movies seems a bit much to me.
As for The Great Beauty, I caught it on the second bounce at the cinema, and last showing at the Prince Charles near Leicester Square, it may still be showing in London somewhere, maybe the Renoir or Odeon Panton Street. Not sure.
I must admit I did watch skyfall today (day holiday looking after my sons dogs ) as I was trying to see what Kincaides clothing was
any way its a lot stranger watching it now ,as I now have ,the mug the suits, the boots the jumper ect ect it was quite weird in a funny sort of way

that French lesbian porn flick. I had a free ticket from the time when the air con was on too much during Philomena - so I didn't have to pay at the door...
A very French film the original title was something like The Life of Adele Part 1 & 2 which gives a clearer idea that this is a film where you see someone living their life, going about their daily business, not hurrying stuff up to fit in with a narrative that has to hit the two hour mark (this film is 3 hours).
Being a lesbo flick it's strange because just the unfolding of it is enough. With hetero love flims we are conditioned for more, as it often unfolds against a backdrop of an action adventure or detective mystery. There are exceptions, like 9 Songs from a few years back and that Marlon Brando butter movie. But this is just the unfolding arc of a relationship.
Acting is very good, rather affecting. Sex scenes are full on no mistake, with a bloke like me thinking at one point 'What are they doing there?' Guess it's to dispense the idea that lesbian sex is all cuddles and warm baths. The actresses start off around the 19 year old mark, and the relationship takes you over the next few years.
I found the sex scenes disturbing. No because I'm a prude. But because I couldn't muster an erection during any of them. Bloody hell, think I must be getting old. I am no longer chained to the maniac, as they say.
Yes, I saw a bit of that. One of the great missed opportunities of cinema imo, that the actor who played the young Scrooge was George Cole who of course went on to be the spin in the St Trinians films, then Arthur Daley the dodgy dealer in Minder. What a shame there couldn't have been another version, with him as the old Scrooge and the young Scrooge, a real first.
Someone in the office was due to interview Cole many years ago and I got her to put the question to him. He was intrigued but said it would lose a great performance by Sim. And of course, Cole was Sim's protege, they were very close, so you can see why he would think that.
BTW Cole also played the young lad to got killed in a dual in Olivier's Henry V in the early 40s, that's going back a bit.
Just watching " Ten little Indians " the 74 remake of the Agatha Christie novel,
it has many well known stars but the ones of interest are Gert frobe and Adolfo Celi.

Did you notice Desmond 'Q' Llewellyn in an early scene, as the old farm hand with a Yokel accent while the kids played on the burnt out Chitty car?
I stayed up to see the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, very good and no commercial breaks, which helped! I like Craig's version, but this perhaps was better as the story was told in a crisper, more concise and understandable way. They condensed some of the extraneous stuff like Blomquist's libel case and his enemy's comeuppance in favour of the missing girl mystery. Stockholm seemed crisper and nicer whereas in the Craig version there was more darkness and fog, and the story got old in its own time, at its own leisure.
