I think everyone on the forum knows your position on the Brosnan films by now Cat, no need to repeat yourself. :)

I was just surprised that osmir said anything against GoldenEye. He is such a fan you know. But you're right, I have far better things to do than arguing about Brosnan. I'm back to produce more unreleased music. See you. :D

    1. GE - I just really enjoy it! And no amount of bribing or death threats from the likes of Blofeld, is going to change that!
I watched it today actually, after 6 weeks without a Bond film! Now I get paid loads...
It was Pierce's first and he looks better in that than the others. It was also the first ever Bond film I brought! :)
    2. TND - I never really got the plot of it but it's got some really decent scenes and Michelle Yeoh played Wai Lin very well.
    3. DAD - I know most people won't agree with me, but it's an OK film. I admit though, it does go off towards the end. The sword fight is probably my favourite part, but I do like it when Bond's with Q and you get to see some of the gadgets from the previous films. Most of the end was crap though.
    4. TWINE - The first Brosnan film I saw. I liked the PTS in the office ("Let's count to 3 - you can do that, can't you?"). And I liked the part where Bond was stuck on the antique chair (I always enjoy the part where Bond's captured, because then we get to see him escape! :D ) But the rest of it was really just a bit of a bore and pretty uninteresting compared to the rest of the Brosnan films.
    Relax darling, I'm on top of the situation -{

    My list:

    1. The World is Not Enough - well made with terrific action scenes and the acting was (as a matter of fact) excellent; added some new dimensions to Bond. Extra special mention to the casting of Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist. Brilliant. :)) 9.5/10

    2. Tomorrow Never Dies - a guilty pleasure; Brosnan looks like he had a very enjoyable time. An entertaining non-stop action adventure which I highly recommend to action fans. 8/10

    3. Die Another Day - I quite liked this movie even if many others don't; it's a decent thriller. 8/10

    4. GoldenEye - even my least favourite of this list is a good Bond entry. I love the jungle hideout in Cuba and Xenia Onatopp is a memorable villainess. 7/10

    1. GE - The epitome of Bond movies with a great cast, a great Bond in Pierce (and not Dalton IMO) and a wonderful plot. It also has the best Bond girl of all time (Natalya).

    2. TWINE - An engaging plot but the villains this time around don't quite stack up to Trevelyan/Onatopp. Renard is very weak but Elektra makes up for him, the sub sequence at the very end when Renard dies is poorly done. However, it has Zukovsky and many other redeeming elements (the PTS, the parahawk chase).

    3. TND - Now we've made a big jump from the top to the almost bottom. Since it's rehashing YOLT and TSWLM, nothing's really new here (though TWINE borrowed heavily from GF, it's not too prevalent as there's sideplots). TND has boring locations and an annoying Bond girl. Lower entry.

    4. DAD - Halle Berry.

1)GE-IMO the best Bond film since TSWLM. Terrific action scenes, a great performance from a terrific Bond, amazing villain and villainess, a pretty good Bond girl, awesome PTS and at the end of the day alot of fun. It is flawed however; I would have gotten rid of the psycho-analysing and M's 'misogynistic dinosaur' speech.

2)TWINE-12th on my list. I loved it. The PTS was IMO one of the five greatest of all time, I love the idea of a villain who feels no pain, I love the idea of a villainess whom Bond falls for and then betrays him, the 'christmas comes only once a year' line is OMO one of the greatest closing lines of all time, Brosnan's performance was IMO his masterpiece and the fifth greatest Bond performance of all time and I had a great time. However what puts it at second place among the Brosnan films is that alot of the concepts weren't followed through. The villain feels no pain, great, but it proved to be completely irrelevant, Electra was a great villainess (and the killing of her was IMO a classic Bond moment) but the love affair between her and Bond wasn't followed through. I didn't get as much of a sense of betrayel as I would have liked. Also, the actions scenes, with the exception of the skiing scene, weren't great and the final fight was a disappointment. Last but certainly not least, while I don't dislike Denise Richards, I do think she's a little young to play a nuclear weapon expert ;) (althugh I did appreciate her name.)

3.TND- I have always been disappointed by this one. It has some good stuff (Brosnan's performance, the entire party scene including the fight, the scenes with Moneypenny, the car chase, the scene involving Dr Kaufman and the idea that a villain has his pain/pleasure centres reversed) but generally speaking the bad far outweighs the good; I can't stand Wai Lin, I hate Carver, nothing was made of Stamper's unique trait, the plot was IMO far too derivitive, the PTS was simply a replica of GE's, the title was terrible, the theme song was completely forgettable, most of the action scenes were pretty uninteresting and Bond's relationship with Paris wasn't explored at all. I didn't love TND but at least it's not as bad as...

4)DAD-a disaster. It's 18th in my list (19th if one includes NSNA) and apart from the fencing scene, the 'say goodbye for us' line and Brosnan's performance, I can't think of anything positive to say.

The World Is Not Enough: An excellent delivery of the elements that made the first few films work, and the novels so captivating, into the modern era. Great characterization, especially with Bond and Elektra, making their relationship the way to conceptualize Bond's venurability for women (and how it goes beyond lustful looks) is excellent. The dialouge is great (hats off to Bruce Fierstein for doing a nice polish of a good script), and exceptionally well casted. David Arnold's best score higlights entertaining, and plot furthering, action sequences. I also liked the nods to Casino Royale in the look of Zucovsky's casino and torture sequence.

A great adventure in the series! 9.5/10

GoldenEye: The Bond film of a generation, much in the same way The Spy Who Loved Me, did for the Moore era, and Goldfinger for the series. This was the film that brought Bond back by capitalizing on what made him so successful initally. Yet what separates GoldenEye from the other forumla-orientated Bond films is it's the first Bond film where Bond is self aware of the idosyncrasies in his world. He is finally let in on the joke about his lifestyle, and is forced to make it relevant. Great villians, and memroable scenes make this all very possible. A few flaws in the plot, but a great ride all the way through. 9/10

Tomorrow Never Dies: Like Die Another Day below it, there are many great scenes that represent some of the series' best stuff. Yet as a whole, the key elements (unique plot, interesting, well developed characters, well crafted villians, good characterization of Bond) don't deliver. Brosnan looks better here than in GoldenEye and in a few moments (specifically the hotel scenes) really sums up Fleming's Bond. The sense of national alarm about the threat in the film is well done, even if the finale doesn't live up to that suspense. Good cast, and action, but little was made in either category to advance to the story. David Arnold's score is light years of improvement over Eric Sierra.

Not bad, but a lot of room for improvement. 8/10

Die Another Day: An interesting, lush, colorful, unique first half with great Fleming references and uses of characters/action. Then a downhill slide to a choppy plot, and lack of development. The action is very well done, and the film probably fairs far better as an action film than a Bond film, though the second half does have some redeeming qualities (Moneypenny and the car chase). The film's ending could have used a re-write, and the dialouge needs a polish to get rid of some poor cliche puns, but there is a lot of potiential in this film. And when it was used right, those parts were better than some whole Bond films. Oh, and who can forget the swordfight!!

    8/10

For me, Goldeneye is Brosnan's best Bond outing. Maybe it was the 7 year hiatus but I really looked forward to this one and enjoyed it immensely. I also think Brosnan didn't take himself as seriously in this one as in some of the later movies and that made for a more enjoyable portrayal. He was tough, but the quips and one-liners seemed to come off better.

As for his other three movies, I enjoyed them all but they sort of lump themselves together in my mind. Each one has stuff I like and stuff I could do without.

TND was a fun movie with some great baddies and a plot reminiscent of the Roger Moore spectacles of the late 70's; the Bond girls however were severely lacking for my tastes (Michelle Yeoh had as much sex appeal as a manilla envelope and Teri Hatcher had such a brief and wooden part as to be utterly insignificant).

TWINE was another great adventure but a little too dark and serious. Renard was a great villain whose particular attributes were not quite exploited enough. Electra quickly degenerated from a tragic figure into a crazed vamp ("EEEEEEEZZZZZZZ MINE!!!") And poor Denise Richards seemed woefully out of place and entirely superficial.

DAD had the kind of over the top story I enjoy; Halle Berry was to die for; Graves, although a bit too young, was suitable sleazy and smarmy; and I loved all the gadgets and homages. I could have done without the cheap CGI (at least spend the money and do it right); and Bond being captured and not being able to escape via his own wits was a letdown. The thought of James Bond being so helpless and out of action for over a year just doesn't sit well to me.

As such, my pecking order shapes up like this:

    Goldeneye
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Die Another Day
    The World Is Not Enough

...and this is why having a woman as a villain can be a dangerous thing. It generates a second female part that serves no real purpose other than to give Bond something warm to end the movie with!

I'd have to go with the order the films were released:

    GE
    TND
    TWINE
    DAD

(I actually enjoy TND more than GE, but must concede that GE is simply a stronger film)

But she was uniquely horrible. I don't think that Christmas Jones was all that bad. I may be the only one here but while I thought she was far too young to be a nuclear scientist, I quite liked her. Afterall she's good looking and relatively harmless. Jinx, however was evil. ;) By that I mean, there wasn't one moment in DAD in which I didn't want to strangle Jinx. I didn't feel the same way about Christmas. Plus, Christmas inspired IMO one of the greatest closing lines of all time, so I can't think too negatively of her.

Personally, I've no problem whatsoever with a villain who's female.. ;)

GoldenEye is my top entry in PB's tenure. There are some scenes I didn't think flowed as successfully as were intended, but on the other hand there were many that did. Chemistry and dialogue between Bond and Natalya after he saves her in the train, where they're rolling around by the tracks, being a good example. I love that.

Well, Brosnan I feel was rather poorly served. There's only one great film in his four, imho, and that's 'Goldeneye'. It's diminishing returns, with my order of preference following the release order.
'Tomorrow Never Dies' has an enjoyable first half with some terrific scenes, but the second is pure bombast and non stop action with little effort elsewhere- very disappointing.

'The World Is Not Enough' I saw as one of the most boring of the series. I haven't seen it in years and just about remember it. A bit of a by-numbers plod, imo.

'Die Another Day' started out great with that capture/torture scene, but when Madonna's awful theme kicks in, the film goes down the tubes with it, imo. A campy, bombastic mess.

Goldeneye, definitely the number 1. Grew up on sean bean in sharpe and think he is really good (even if I wish he had been bond at some point). This was always a special film because of the game as well.

Then TWINE and TND are pretty even I liked parts of both films. DAD was his worst in my view shame he didn't go out on a high and shrouded in controversy

    1. The World Is Not Enough: Not the most exciting Bond movie with some boring action scenes, but an interesting and mature story.

    2. Tomorrow Never Dies: Carver is an underrated villain and I found his scheme of media domination over China clever. There are however, too many action scenes which become distracting. I didn't like the locations, and the best location had already been used in TMWTGG. It feels undisciplined with the first half leading up to Wade's cameo and the second half after Wade's cameo feeling like two different movies. TND doesn't get into the plot until near the end, but until that point, it is all mindless action.

    3. Die Another Day: An entertaining movie with a great first half. The script feels sloppy during the second half with no clear explanation of what Gustav Graves wants to do with the lazer satallite. It is a lazy film that feels rushed. It is not well put together and thought out like TWINE.

    4. GoldenEye: BORING. JUST BORING.

The Brosnan period overall is not very exciting to me.

    1. Goldeneye - The best first outing by an actor since Dr. No. Great plot, good bond girl, great villains, all around a very solid outing.

    2. TWINE - Despite the much reviled Denise Richards, this film has a very good villain, an interesting plot, M being imprisoned and being a little clever was cool, the boat chase was awesome (the tie straightening a wonderful touch), etc.

    3. TND - Although the idea of starting a war to cover it is a little farfetched, I really like the soundtrack of TND, the chinese agent, there is much to like here. This is a solid outing as well.

    4. DAD - And then it all goes horribly, horribly wrong. The main villain is completely unconvincing, the plot is too farfetched, tragic CGI, etc. It has its moments, I don't hate this film, but I put this film down with TMWGG, AVTAK, LTK and MR as the weakest of the bunch for bond films. I rank it 16 out of 20 (haven't ranked CR yet, too early).

Same here. For me, GoldenEye is the only one of Pierce Brosnan's films that really holds my attention from start to finish. TWINE is a solid film that has flaws. DAD has a good first half, but a very poor second half. Same with TND, except it's first half is not as good.

    1. TWINE. A storyline which is more Flemingesque than normal, Brosnan at his peak, superb supporting cast (as well as Denise Richards), and above all... Elektra.

    2. TND. The classically simple plot, excellent locations, and Arnold's earnest and successful attempt at being John Barry's heir.

    3. DAD. The first half I'd rank alongside at least half of the other Bonds- the Cuba sequence, the swordfight, M's relationship with Bond. Granted, it falls off towards the end. (But so did DAF, another of my favourites.)

    4. GE. Brosnan is fine, but the music stinks and the Severnaya sequence is endless.

I don't think you can say "Brosnan sucks". In my opinion none of the actors who have portrayed bond have been bad. Some have just been better than others. I think it's too early to say where you would rank DC, but from CR he is on the right track.
