For me, S1 has held up better than S2 over the years. I think the melding of scenes shot by Donner and Lester has given S2 something of a schizophrenic feel at times as it's dead serious one second and slapstick the next. I thought S1 balanced the drama and camp better.
I read somewhere that some people at Warner Brothers are working on a semi-director's cut of S2, and they're trying to restore as much of Donner's original footage as possible. That might make for an interesting take on S2 as I'd love to see a version closer to Donner's vision without any of Lester's contributions.
So,originally,Superman I & II were shot back to back and at some point Donner left before it had all been completed? It would explain the shifting tone of SII and the full scale slide into slapstick for SIII.If they do release an alternative version of SII I'd buy it.
Right on both counts. There's an absolutely terrific documentary on the Superman: Director's Cut DVD that goes into great detail on the behind the scenes drama in the making of the first two movies and why Donner was sacked. They really don't pull any punches as with some of these featurettes.
While I quite liked her performances I must admit I never found Margot that attractive.Christopher Reeve was a handsome chap and I could never quite see why Superman would be so besotted with her.

I think it's called "putting vaseline on the camera lens".
As for Margot Kidder, I used to feel the same way until I saw the screen tests for some of the other actresses who tried for the role (yes, they're on the same Superman: Director's Cut DVD). Even though there were prettier actresses, Kidder really nailed the feisty reporter aspect of the character and seemed to have real chemistry with Reeve; something the other actresses did not.

That reminds me of a hilarious sketch on Saturday Night Live; it was a sendup of the Elizabeth Taylor commercials for her Diamonds perfume or somesuch. The picture would be crystal clear until Liz's closeup. At that point a gauzy veil would cover the camera while she said her lines. Then, as soon as she left the frame, the veil would lift.
All this talk of vaseline on the camera turns one's thoughts to Casino Royale and a certain Mr Craig,although I'm far too much of a gentleman to mention it...:v
thats also why lois lane is hardly in S:III margot was the only one that stood up to the studio when donner was sacked

I do think Superman #1 is a better film than #2 but I enjoy both greatly. I much prefer them to any Batman films, easily more than any X-Men film and Supes #1 more than either Spiderman. The less said about 3 and 4 though the better.
I can't say I'm excited about this one. I don't like any of the main casting and nothing in the trailer has lead me to change my mind. Routh still looks like a doofy plank, Spacey seems to be camping it up and whatserface as Lois seems blah (something Margot Kidder though not as pretty was definitely not) as well as too young (as does Routh - especially for a sequal after years have past)

I also think the first Superman movie is the high water mark for comics films. I watched it again a couple of weeks ago and it's held up remarkably well, especially when you consider that it was made almost 30 years ago.
As for Superman Returns, I think any actor would have a hard time measuring up to Christopher Reeve, who looked like he literally stepped out of the comic. I think Routh will be fine. He's not nearly as repulsive as some of the "hot, young actors" out there and, if nothing else you won't need to put a tube of vaseline on the camera to make him look acceptable. He does look a little young but I think the producers are looking at this as the rebirth of the franchise so they can be forgiven for going younger.
I don't think Spacey's Lex will be as campy as people fear. The newer clips and trailers definitely show his dark side.
And I like the fact that this movie embraces its history (well, at least the good stuff) and doesn't take the easy way out via yet another reboot.

Don't worry, Ottman told me there'll be tons of Superman march - I'm afraid he might overuse it from what he told. And the Superman March is the very first track on the soundtrack.

Hm... in deed. That's curios. Well, we did the interview just before the recording, hope he didn't change too much compared to that, because what he said sounded awesome. I'm glad the rest of the subliminary themes (Kent Family, Lex Luthor Theme, Love Theme, Personal Theme) get a fair share of the spotlight. In the original, I felt that Williams threw away his themes quite easily once they were used and didn't make out the most of them... Now I feel a good-old fashioned, thematic approach to which I'm looking forward too.
But good casting would be looking right and being able to act for the role. With years to cast the part right it shouldn't be impossible for a major franchise to pull off but alas seemingly it is.

I like what I hear of Ottoman's stuff, but as a friend pointed out to me, it's a little disappointing in places- his treatment of the love theme in the last track for instance: somehow he makes it sound so ordinary.

Tragically I've only heard it'll be part of a 14 disc set! I like the Superman films, but I'm not sure I like them that much!
