Will this be another "rogue mission"?

It feels like the whole rogue thing has been done a lot lately, and it looks like Spectre is following suit.

Casino Royale had Bond resign from MI6 to spend more time with Vesper.
Quantum of Solace had Bond go on a revenge mission while being suspended from duty (just like in License to Kill).
Skyfall had Bond hide from MI6 and avoid it after his perceived death.

Is leaving MI6 and coming back going to be an every-movie thing for Craig's Bond?

Lots to like in the trailer, but yes give me a straight forward mission film any day! What was once an interesting concept like in LTK is becoming all too common unfortunately.

I was also looking forward for the new M to be given something more to do than reprimand Bond - Judi Dench seemed to do that in every film she was in!

Still, will await the film before I judge it on those few minutes...

This would be the 8th time Craig has either opened or closed the door to MI6, too many.

But like you said, it will still most likely be a really good movie.

Only one of your three examples involves a rogue mission. The rogue mission part of SF is arguably when he takes off to Scotland, but since he has the head of MI6 in the seat next him, it's not exactly rogue.

SPECTRE could be a semi-rogue mission. M wants Bond to find out what's going on, but it can't be official because of everything that's going on with Her Majesty's Government, and Bond is to get only limited assistance from Moneypenny, Q, and Tanner, the only people M trusts (in addition to Bond).

I really dunno. I have read no scripts, etc. Just a guess.

Well PTS he is def doing something "personal" but is the rest rogue?

He is clearly seen being armed with gadgets and a brand new Aston in the Q Lab so presume he is on assignment and not just given it for his own personal use!

Yes, but there's defenitely some sort of personal connection with Bond and SPECTRE, as was revealed in both videos. And there was the quote from today's trailer of Bond: "Can you make me dissapear" (something like that?) Which kind of seems to imply he goes on a personal quest that M doesn't need to know about. (I'm guessing)

Yep but does he stagger across it accidentally? He looks pretty shocked when Waltz looks up at him as if he recognised him unexpectedly.

The disappear bit you could be right or maybe he meant hide himself from SPECTRE?

I guess all these Qs pretty much make this exciting as we are clueless at this point!!

You're right! I somehow have the feeling the dissapearing happens very early on as Bond goes out to get information from Mr. White, then somehow he gets more information from SPECTRE and finds out is linked to SPECTRE himself (Hence his name on the wall and such...) Then later he Rome he finds out Oberhauser is actually leading it, which shocks Bond. (That how I kind of pieced together the plot from the trailers, but I'm merely guessing here of course! )

Bit of a jigsaw at the moment isn't it!! Im not sure if there is a location / scene break between Mr White scenes and the big snow attack

I believe there is a huge spoiler on 007 today about Lea (which I'm avoiding) as I'm clueless how she fits into the story and why SPECTRE are after her anyhow.

My finger hovered over the leaked script a few times but glad I didn't however maybe might need to avoid another new trailer as I mapped out Skyfall eventually just before the release

Yes it's tough isn't it? I am very proud of myself for not reading the script at all. I too always try to keep away from as many spoilers as possible, but you always end up looking at the trailers, some pictures, go onto the forums and can't help but learn all kinds of things about the plot anyway... Also ended up figuring out a lot about Skyfall before it's release. (Eve being the new Moneypenny was a complete suprise to me though! I'm so glad I didn't know about that untill I saw the actual film! )

The problem is is that SO much has been leaked/written even if you didn't read the leaked script/shooting draft...it can be quite easy to stumble across plot points.... :(

Without revealing anything - has anything appeared to deviate from the leaked script (rewritten) from what you have seen?

Hopefully not a rogue mission. I'd also like back the good ol' M/ Bond in the office with padded door mission briefings, without the Judi Dench mother/son thing. The last one was in TLD. 28 years ago...

    A thought from earlier today.

Why the automatic assumption that the events in Mexico City happen in the same time frame as the main plot?

From the Fiennes and Waltz's lines in the trailer plus Denbigh's involvement, I think it is possible that whatever happened there could be something that challenges Bond's employment in MI6.

The rogue thing is the modern cliche. So is the idea of partners/bosses/subordinates fighting until they achieve grudging respect for one another.

It's harder to write a story where people cooperate against a common enemy and keep the momentum than to have them bickering Archie and Reggie style for half or more of the story.

Please don't think I am one for rogue missions, because I'm not. I loved it in LTK back in the day, but I crave a "normal" mission like the early movies. Lots of fans have hinted this setup: PTS, 007 called to M's office, given the mission and off he goes.

However, there are times where 007 has gone off piste yet within the remit given to him by M. A couple that spring to mind are OHMSS "Operation Bedlam is dead!", yet he goes to Switzerland and chases Blofeld anyway. Also in MR while in Venice M suggests Bond take a fortnight's leave in Rio so is kind of facilitating the rogue mission himself.

I hope the SPECTRE mission remit is more like OHMSS or MR rather than LTK.

Bond's original mission to kill Scaramanga in TMWTGG is also somewhat rogue, but also approved by M. I think it's supposed to be an unofficial mission.

From what I've pieced together through all the filming and now seeing the last trailer, they don't seemed to be deviating too much from the original scripts, however, we have yet to see everything (and that's a LOT) so they may have reworked some plot points and scenes to make it flow better or put in more twists. Bond's PTS is obviously an operation he does without Mallory's authorization (hence the trailer scene where he's grilling Bond in his office), but it's possible he learns something from this that forces M to have him do more investigating and that's what sets off the plot. So I think the PTS is probably the only part of the film where he's doing an unauthorized operation. I think he asks Q to "hide" him in the trailer because he may have another type of tracking device on him like he did in CR so he wants Q to mask his locations electronically. I'm only guessing at that but it makes sense - though I think M and Tanner and Moneypenney will probably know where he's at.

They seemed to be using the same type of plot device they used in SF when Bond and M went to Scotland - having M/Q/Tanner hide Bond from the rest of the government so he can ferret the villains out and that way if he fails only Bond would be held accountable. It seems like they came up with this plot device in SF and in this film to show how Mallory transforms from being a deskbound - follow the rules government official into the type of character one has to become to run a spy agency where sometimes going outside the box is the only way to get the job done. In this respect, I think M, Q, Tanner and Moneypenney will have more prominent roles in regards to the plot of this film - and that would be great.

I agree, and it's not a new narrative trick either. OHMSS, MKR, LTK and QoS all have M granting Bond leave to work unofficially (whether intentional or not) with quiet support and input from MPenny and or Q. It was an aspect of SF's story that really did reach back to the past in that sense, adding Tanner into the equation. Colin Salmon's Robertson too if you add DAD.

Re M's temper, I hope we DO see M-Malry blow his top. Mr Finnes can do fury well, so it would be great to see his M loose patience the way Bernard Lee used to as Admiral M-Messy.

Mendez is a very theatrical film maker, and SF had that in reams. Especially the way Silva was presented as well as portrayed as the baddie. I expect that SPEC will probably reveal just how far from grace M-Manf had fallen, White really was much more of a Pawn than he ever gave away, and Bond himself will be painted in a new dramatic light. Not to mention SPECTRE as an organisation has never been played small scale. (FYEO's PTS does not count!) :D It is just a question of the writing and direction making these things dramatic and tense a'la FRWL, FYEO, TLD and CR-06, or more crass, unclear and throwaway such as DAF, TSWLM, DAD, or QoS.
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

Just read the latest article on the film at MI6-HQ.com and it does a good job summarizing it and how it may play out based on the trailer and prior press releases.

Let's hope going rogue isn't the new facet of the Bond Formula. It worked well in LTK because it was unexpected.

Agreed. I don't think that MI6 would keep him on if he went rogue so much; he would be too much of a liability.

If it is, I will be a bit disappointed.

It has been done to death in Craig's films, just give him a straight-up mission already.
