To say that Bond is a relic from a bygone era would be an understatement. I guess the question we must ask ourselves is how much of what Fleming depicted can be stripped away before it’s no longer James Bond? I have no appetite for the casual racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. in Fleming. It goes without saying that belongs in the past. But if you sterilize Bond entirely what are you left with? Ethan Hunt. Once Bond becomes a fully generic action hero it’s time to call it a day.

    None of this is happening.
An excellent writer, who happens to be a woman, may be writing some script for new film. That’s all we know, and the reaction is that the sky is falling because Bond is being neutered. That’s rather telling that some folks would feel the thing they love is threatened in this way. We do know that there’s a woman in charge of the whole series, don’t we?

Bond, identifies as a woman and becomes the first female 007. Just as
Blofeld puts in a claim for the damage to his eye. ;)

Gosh, so much hate and aggression in the forum these days. Can't we all just love each other, unite over our favourite tuxedo wearing Bond, and have fruitful conversations and discussions.
I'm worried about how many writers they've had on Bond 25, rather than who they are.

I know nothing about Ms. Waller-Bridge or her work, so I don’t have an opinion about her involvement. My statement was a general one about the way the character has evolved over time. Much of it has been both necessary and natural.

And for the record, I do not much appreciate the inference in your post regarding my attitudes towards women. It’s not warranted by anything I have written in this thread.

If any person other than James Bond becomes 007, I think it can be a very good thing. If this another person becomes 007 and does not have the name James Bond, it indisputably disproves the "James Bond is a codename" theory.

There was some criticism of the scene in SF where Bond slips into the shower to join the former underage sex slave Severine.

I did think that scene was problematic: it made me shiver a bit in the cinema. Too weird, James.
Some folks had trouble with him quipping after Severine was shot dead, but I thought that was much less worrying. Thinking that the best way to show sympathy to a woman who's been forcibly raped many times is to pop your togs off and follow her into the shower? Ugh. I do wonder why they thought that was okay. Top film otherwise though.

Might be a bit of an overreaction to a "quote" attributed to no one that may be from who knows where and have absolutely nothing to do with reality....but then again we're the same folks who were having a fit over Bond having a beard in SF and EON using stand-in locations and jumping to the conclusion that the film was being made on the cheap. :))

I still remember the reaction to Craig getting cast on here: blimey! There was all sort of talk of how Casino Royale was throwing away the sacred 'formula' and how it couldn't work and disrespecting the franchise etc. etc. :))

I remember asking one chap at the time how he'd react if the new Bond film featured a fair-haired Bond who never goes to MI6 HQ to receive his briefing, doesn't wear a dinner suit at any point, doesn't order a Martini, doesn't drive a sportscar, doesn't even feature in the opening credits; the film doesn't feature Q and even features baddies from another world! He obviously said it would be terrible and he'd hate the film as it wouldn't be a 007 movie... that's when I had to point out I was describing 'Live And Let Die' ;)
'Oh but that's different' he said :D

I wouldn't worry too much; there are always a few writers on these things, plus ones I'm sure we never get to know about. It's not even certain we're supposed to know PWB is writing this one, if she is at all.

When folks know admit they know nothing about her besides her gender, and the same conversation moves towards fears of Bond being sterilised, I don't really have to make any inferences.
I'm not trying to offend anyone, but do those two points in the conversation seem a logical and reasonable progression to anyone? If they do then I would ask to you to perhaps have a think about your own thought processes rather than immediately get defensive.

Fine, we’ll do this the hard way.

Earlier today, a member posted a tabloid spread expressing some very unfavorable viewpoints about Bond. We know it’s just tabloid nonsense, but a few members wrote posts in response to the sentiments expressed by the tabloid (which was presumably authored by living people who harbor such views). My post from which you have selectively quoted was written in response to that line of discussion.

I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that virulent sexism in response to pop culture events, such as the fringe backlash to Captain Marvel, should be condemned. That, however, is not what is happening in this thread. Yet you have repeatedly framed the discussion as though that is what is occurring. It’s dishonest, disrespectful, and needs to stop.

That’s the last I’ll say of it. I apologize to the other members to the extent I have contributed to the derailment of this thread.

I must say the lack of news or press conference etc is starting to take its toll on me now. I am a very patient person and appreciate the secrecy around the plot etc is essential baring in mind previous issues around leaks etc but its starting to feel like the producers and people around making the film are neglecting the fans. I’m sure once we see the film and the excitement builds around release it’ll be worth it but the lack of something for us to really talk about is just taking the p**s now.

Something for the fans and press to get excited about is now more important than ever as at the moment I’m tiring of the lack of anything official or something to heat things up. Don’t get me wrong I’m keen as anyone for the film and it doesn’t dampen by interest at all, it’s just disappointing that the producers haven’t given us anything yet baring in mind the film is only a year from release!!

Yes, for an actor‘s final outing, there should be „more“.

They also could have released SOMETHING in the 4.5 year gap, let it be a special dvd with all existing deleted scenes or new books...just something. Also I‘d like to have merchandise like in the 90‘s back again.
Nowadays it‘s like James Bond ceases to exist between films.
The name is Walker by the way.

I completely agree, don't even think making some form of statement would cause bond fatigue with 12 months left until release, having nothing concrete also adds to the plethora of fake news articles sumising all the could be and possible direction the film is heading in. I'm also weary of all the "next bond" diatribe.

I'm hoping for a good old fashioned raid in Bond25. In that case it would be natural for Craig's Bond to carry a HK UMP9 smg again.

It’ll happen, but they don’t need to do it immediately for the fans. The press will get excited whenever it happens: they’re not going to forget about it because it’s supposedly taking too long.

I agree with you but when we're going well off topic and talking nonsense and fake news is championing this thread it get tiresome. Don't get me wrong its nice to have general chat about the subject and rumours that have substance but to have very little with a year to go is frustrating. I also agree in relation to that things will come in time but we've been saying this for months now. Its certainly not dampened my interest but surely the press and fans need something to turn the heat up???

I do get the feeling that the fans are getting neglected this time around. i think the producers feel it builds the excitement the less we know, but i think something like the press conference and an image etc that doesnt give anything away wont ruin it at all, it will only ramp the excitement up!

Must be close now - the leaked filming in Norway shows things are kicking off (slowly)

If the press conference really is in Jamaica (particularly Goldeneye Resort) the excitement levels will soon hit the roof.

Agree all these stupid Daily Mail type rumours and gossip gets dreary and best to avoid as some of it really is bullbullshite

The problem with Goldeneye though is that it’s not all that amazing a house. To be honest I would prefer if they used somewhere that they thought looked better rather than worry about any significance, but if they can make it work then sure.

Agreed about the rumours but the Mail know how to stoke up the angers of a certain section of the audience.

Having the press conference from Jamaica makes sense given Bond's deep history there. They could even have the presser held outdoors.

If Bond really has retired at the start of the film, Goldeneye should be his home. I know some would roll their eyes, but I think it’s appropriate. It’s also subtle fan service, which is always the best kind. A lot of people watching the film wouldn’t make the connection. The fact that it’s not a particularly elaborate home also fits. We saw where Craig’s Bond was living when he had quit the service in Skyfall. Goldeneye would be a step up!
