I was under the impression that Fleming had Bond order a vodka martini because at that time all martini's were made with only gin and a bit of vermouth. So having Bond having his martini (not the vespers in CR but his normal vodka martinis) with vodka and vermouth made it more special in the '50's.

And I totally agree that beer is not supposed to be Bond's drink and especially not Heineken. But I just wonder why this is such a controversy because they have been involved in other movies as well.

Sorry for the spelling error, I hope I won't be lifted off my bed tonight by the spelling police. I remember reading somewhere that they changed the recipe and with that the name to Lillet Blanc, but I might have misunderstood. Thanks for the correction, Ill start looking for a bottle tomorrow :).
I totally agree that brands have been linked with Bond movies for a long time, but you never saw Rog, or Pierce doing a commercial advertising the latest product that was being showcased in the film.

    Are you sure?

Well when it comes to brand names, always good to get them right. :) And yes, the recipe did change, along with the name...but wasn't discontinued per se...

As for the visa commercial, I stand corrected...although for me - because Bond isn't associated with any particular credit card in the films (waiting for someone to post a clip of Bond using American Express... :)) ) advertising Visa doesn't seem so bad. You ask anyone which drink is associated with Bond, and they will reply with Vodka Martini's (maybe Bollinger) so to see him now advertising a beer... (and IMO, not a particularly high quality one) just seems cheap. It's also interesting to see that Craig had to defend this advert too.... and in doing so, makes me feel like they have sold out and he doesn't rate the brand.

    Just my opinion!

I bet you have a bottle lillet blanc.

I think they just tweaked the recipe slightly, (rather than discontinuing it) but you're right in the fact they renamed it Lillet Blanc.

As I was informed here, vodka is a pretty cheap liquor to make, right? Making it a somewhat ironic symbol of Bond's rich tastes in mixed drinks. We'd like to think his vodka endorsements are of higher stature than his Heineken endorsements, and my guess is that it comes from how they are served and where.

He is unlikely to order beer in a tux, but a vodka martini would be a-okay.

Agreed. It will very much depend on the scenario.

In LTK Pam and Bond order beers in the dodgy bar ... Look a bit ridiculous to order a Martini there ....

They tweaked 1987 the recipe of Lille blanc and 1990 of Lille Rouge.
But kina lillet was Not produced anymore.
Actually lillet blanc taste much different than kina lillet, but is now the closest thing you can get.

I've read that Cocchi Americano is currently the closest in taste to the original Kina Lillet. Haven't managed to get hold of any so I'm not able to verify that.

We are all Bond fans here but James Bond 007 cologne which is probably rebottled Old Spice....WTF? I'd like to say I can't imagine anyone on here who'd have the guts to openly buy this let alone wear it although I'm sure there are a few who will regrettably. Overpriced Tom Ford products is one thing but at least Bond utilises them on screen but this is just bloody ridiculous & quite frankly a bit of an insult to the Bond enthusiast & the collectors this crap is probably aimed at. BB, MGW you really need to have a quiet word with your marketing team if the individuals handing out product licenses are also responsible for the current campaign. Remember Albert R.Broccoli's EON Productions presents.......used to mean quality, something we all look forward to every 2-3 years so after the current lack lustre campaign Skyfall had better not be something we stuff on December 25th or Thanksgiving :#

I have heard there are a few other drinks that taste more like Kina Lillet than Lillet Blanc, as well.

The main difference is the quinine content. You can use standard vermouth and use quinine powder to alter the taste, apparently.

Bond drinks beer in the novels and I never heard any complains about that. Bond drinks beer in QoS with Felix, no complains about that either. Gordon's is named in CR and Gordon's isn't a great gin, never heard complains about that. Okay, the Vesper quote is an exact copy of the one in the book going so far as to asume that the bar carries Kila Linet, a drink that has been discontinued for a long time. Product placement has been prevalent in 007 films since the beginning. Just look at Dr No where it is still not as in your face as say a movie like Moonraker (anyone wants a 7Up, a Seiko or a flight with a certain airline?) but it was still there. A Perrier truck being destroyed by Bond in a tank in Goldeneye with the truck filling the entire screen for all of us to see before Bond crashes true it is also quite obvious. "Rolex?" "Omega!" Bond drinking Smirnoff Red in Tomorrow Never Dies is just as cheap an example of product placement as Bond ordering a Heineken. Smirnoff Red is one of the cheapest vodka's around. Nothing exclusive about that, but still, I heard no complains at the time. So why is everyone complaining about the Heineken tie-in?

Unless Bond orders his Heineken, turns to the camera, holds up the bottle for all of us to see and says: "I only drink Heineken, the best and most exclusive beer in the world. Do like 007 does and get one tonight at the bar during the intermission" I don't think it is any different from most of the other tie-ins by a big company.

I drink Heineken and I approve of this message. {[]

This is correct. The difference between Kina Lillet and Lillet Blanc is such that if you'd like drink a Vesper as IF had it, you'll have throw in a dash of bitters.

Not to mention also that you should use higher proof gin and vodka if you want to stay faithfull, as the 38%abv clear spirits were very rare in the '50s and '60s.

I'm really not sure that there's a massive difference between James Bond 007 cologne and a million other Bond products that have hit the market almost since day one 50 years ago. A quick search of eBay brings up all sorts of tacky toys, gadgets and lame movie tie-ins. Yes, we've had some really tasteful - and expensive - Bond products over the years too which few people would complain about for anything other than the price, but there's never been a shortage of tacky stuff. I suspect there will be a lot of people on these boards who will buy the cologne either purely as a collector's item that they'll never open, or to wear on a daily basis. I don't collect Bond tie-ins, but as someone who wears cologne practically every day, if this smells nice and does not cost a ridiculous amount of money, I'll likely pick one up and add it to my after shave shelf although I will say that if anyone asks me what I'm wearing, I may not tell them it's James Bond 007! :o

VisitBritain is marking the launch of the latest James Bond film Skyfall with it's first international cinema ad, which encourages foreigners to visit the UK and 'live like Bond'.

The tourism body is rolling out a cinema ad with archive clips from all six Bond actors. The footage is spliced with shots of British cities and countryside. The ad concludes with a scene from Skyfall, with current Bond actor Daniel Craig gazing out over London's skyline and the message 'Bond is GREAT Britain' on screen. It concludes with VisitBritain's 'You're invited' strapline.
