Have fun Thunderpussy! I'd be interested to know what you think compared to the Blu-Rays when you've had chance to enjoy them!

Not going in to too much detail, as I don't know much about the technical side of 4k video, but as
an average punter, I'm very happy. The picture quality really is a bump up from the standard Blu-ray,
better contrast, detail and richer colours. With HDR helping with the highlights and darker scenes.
Sound quality is the same 5.1 dts, and nothing new in the extras. I think Skyfall looks the best, maybe
because it was shot digitally instead of film ? ( I may be wrong there, but I think it was )

Skyfall and Spectre look the best because their digital intermediate was finished at 4K. Casino Royale and Quantum were finished at 2K and up-scaled to 4k for this UHD release.

    Thanks TheExit148 {[] as I said, I'm no expert :)

Watching the desert scenes in SPECTRE, you can really notice the improvements with HDR, the
highlights are much better controlled. ( Only my opinion, I could be wrong ) ;)

Pausing OHMSS today, at the end, where the dog
Runs over to Bond. In this wide format, I noticed a
Guy in a blue jacket, and what looks like a name badge
Or pass of some sort on his jacket. I'm guessing he
    Was the dog trainer ?

I have a new subscription service with my new cable TV plan called EPIX which is owned by MGM and they are featuring many of the Bond films on demand in 4K HDR. Fortunately, I have been upgraded to a 4K HDR cable box so along w/ my 4K HDR TV I can take advantage of the 4K. I only had a chance to watch the TB PTS and have to say that it is superior to the Blu Ray in overall picture quality.
The contrast ratios are superior and black looks much more "black" rather than the grey that passes for black in lesser formats and the picture appears brighter and has a bit more definition and detail. Looking forward to checking out Skyfall and SPECTRE as their their digital intermediates was finished at 4K. Good stuff.
With regards to 4K HDR, apparently the added pixels of 4K really only makes a difference with monitors 60" on up (I have a 55") the real difference maker with sets of any size is the HDR which really improves contrast ratio, widens/expands the color pallet and improves depth of field.

Watched TSWLM on blu-ray last night and was disappointed that the Egypt scenes were not sandy yellow like I remembered them. Instead they were pale and white and all the warmth was gone. After the film ended I put in my old Special Edition DVD and it looked much better. Anyone else notice this?

I took a photo of each with my phone. I realize it’s not an exact science because the phone has its own auto white balance, but it still shows the top DVD warmer yellow than the bottom blu-ray being pale.

I must say that I just a little disappointed that QOS, SF, and SP did not get any new bonus features. All of them really deserve more than the small amount that we got before. If other popular movies can get new content on their 4K releases so can Bond.

I fully agree, I'm amazed at how little " Special features " we're getting lately. :#

    as a quick heads up:

On Vudu (in the USA, at least), you can buy all 24 EON Bond films for streaming for only $99.99 + tax. That's $4.17 for each movie. The format is 4K/UHD as well, about as good as you're going to get.
    Current rankings:
    OHMSS>FRWL>CR>TSWLM>YOLT>MR>SF>FYEO>GE>OP>DN>
    TWINE>TND>QOS>TB>TMWTGG>GF>LALD>TLD>AVTAK>SP>DAF>LTK>DAD
    Bond rankings: Lazenby>Moore>Connery>Craig>Brosnan>Dalton

Hi everyone! New forum member, long time Bond fan. I currently own the Ultimate Edition DVD sets but am looking to upgrade. Two quick questions...

    1) I saw Gymkata's post about the Vudu UHX 24 pack for $99. Currently it's $149. Does anyone know the price history on this bundle? That $99 mark would be too good to pass up.
    2) It seems that historically, when a new Bond is being released, a new repackaging of the DVD's/Blu Rays comes with it. I haven't seen any news on this front. Does anyone know of any such upcoming box sets?

    Great forum!
    Thanks

    Hi bassjim67, I don't have any answers
Only that there will probably be a new
Box set released with NTTD and a 4k
    Version of it too.

Thanks Thunderpussy, I didn't think there was any news, but I wanted to confirm.

Just something to think about when it comes to Bond films in 4K HDR and whether it is better to stream or purchase the actual discs(ie "physical media"). Most streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, etc stream at 25 Mbps (Megabits per second). An actual 4k Blu Ray disc transfers at 128 Mbps which means you are getting 5X's the amount of data to fill your screen with. Color tones, sharpness, and dynamic range are all filled with much more substance and it can be very noticeable, especially as screen size increase. So if you have a 4K Blu Ray player to go along with your 4K TV and want the best possible visual quality, the discs are the way to go. There's nothing wrong with 4k HDR streaming, it still looks very good....it's just not as good as the physical media (discs).
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,697MI6 Agent
Agreed, I think most Reviewers and Tech guys agree a physical Disc will always
    Be superior. -{

It's interesting that MGM (and EON) have ditched 20th Century Fox as their home video distributors as of 6/30/20.
I wonder if Fox being taken over by Disney had more than a little to do with that decision? There has been a lot of chatter since Disney
bought Fox (it will no longer be called Fox) that Disney will be putting any future 4K releases of classic Fox films on ice for the foreseeable future and just focus on home video/4K releases of new films. It's really unfortunate that those many, many classic Fox films won't see the light of day on 4K Blu Ray any time soon. I don't think it has been announced yet who MGM/EON will now partner with for home video releases but IMO, Universal would not be a bad choice. Universal has done some great great stuff with 4K releases (most recently the classic Hitchcock films) they would probably do justice to the inevitable 4K Blu Ray releases of the classic Bond films. Given the significantly higher resolution of 35mm film over digital, if done properly, remastered 4K Blu Rays of the classic, shot on film, Bonds could look incredible.

Hope that there is more news about this topic in the near future. With all of the behind the scenes stuff that has happed at MGM in the last two years or so, I am curious to see how this might affect releases of the pervious movies in the 4K format on physical media.

If so, perhaps would-be Bond director Danny Boyle could pop up in the Dominic Cummings role - or set up a blog outlining his concerns!
