I, like a lot of people have been viewing this thread with a lot of interest. Well, some time ago I started looking into a suitable donor car for my own db5 delusion. I really don’t have the money nor the space, and I’m sure the legalities are different country to country. ( I know I probably couldn’t do this in Australia and get it road legal) But I was looking for a suitable car to transform with a fibreglass shell. Well to me the only place to start is making sure you have the right wheel base and platform ie; layout which include driver position and overall proportions. Turns out this is harder than it seems. In any case if you weren’t going to start from scratch with a spaceframe etc, here’s a car with what I consider the right platform. That is 6 cylinder, 5 speed manual, 2 door, 4 seater, rear wheel drive, correct wheel base (off by 30mm) that is not too old and also has the ability for performance upgrades. Lets be honest... if you going to do this whatever the car is underneath, its probably going to get a full body replacement so it's the platform thats important. My thinking was to replace the outer shell and of course mess about with the interior, probably turn it into a retro sort of arrangement.
Of course given that most cars built in recent history are a monocoque chassis or similar we have some problems. We’ve all seen cars which have been turned into something different entirely, but how do they make them street legal??? Maybe its just that I’m in Australia, which is of course a Nanny State and you can’t do anything outside the ‘norm’, but I’ll sight the Toyota which was turned into a later model Aston earlier in the thread as an example. The car I’m suggesting is a Nissan 300Zx Z31 1983-1989 (it may be known by something else where you’re from)
Yeah yeah.... Nissan.... get over it!!! If you want a car with almost an almost identiacl platform and unlimited performance upgrades and parts available like adjustable suspension which you’re going to need to get the right ride height etc, its a better place to start than most. Check out my wheel base and platform comparison (to scale) and let us all know what you think... AND importantly could this be done legally???
A final word on structural integrity, Some companies do 300Zx Z31 convertible conversions by fitting supporting beams along the under carriage, which you would do, so to my mind its not a question of whether you could build it structurally sound, but whether you could build it legally for road use... thoughts???

just looked the listing and it is an MX5 and his last statement is so true as there are three choices for trips in an Aston and only one ends up being your choice!

I think using a BMW is a good idea for a donor car, but only using the transmission and running gear. Trying to convert an existing bodyshell to look like a DB5 is a terrible way to do it.

MMMMMMmmmmm....MX5 great platform??? E30 325i Cabriolet wheelbase is similar, but the Z Car is a better match. As I said above, if you were to do it you are throwing away the whole outer shell.

Yup you are right based on a Mark 1 MX5 that was made in 1990, still has the mark 1 doors on it, he states the engine is 1,900cc, which is odd they were all 1,600cc till 1994 when they introduced the 1,800cc engine. £14,000 He's havin a Larf

Hopefully aston original Windows should fit and locking system would be from a kit car part supplier.for me that is because i couldn't use a car and change bodyshell
Cause to regulations . Well if i don't want to use a old car with frame like a very old Volvo,
And there is alot of builders forum in Sweden so the skills is good here i belive.
