Does anyone have any experience with the Herring Mustang Desert Boot? I've read plenty of negative reviews here on the Sanders & Sanders. This looks like a decent alternative.

If you haven't seen it, I started a new thread for the Read Appreciation Contest:

    http://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/48531/iconic-alternatives-reader-appreciation-contest/

That way this thread won't get derailed and we can keep talking about watches and such :)

Lots of post updates coming today and tomorrow (catching up!). Here are the first three. I don't think there is anything particularly new or surprising. Mainly added suggestions from here and one or two others I've found.

    Kentons: http://www.iconicalternatives.com/2015/12/01/j-crew-kentons-spectre/

BC Morocco belt with PPK's excellent suggestion added: http://www.iconicalternatives.com/2015/12/18/brunello-cucinelli-spectre-belt/

Solden jacket (more new options added here): http://www.iconicalternatives.com/2016/01/10/tom-ford-solden-jacket/

Also, just FYI that Massimo Dutti Solden alternative is on sale for $129 right now. It's in the post.

    Cheers! {[]

    Couple of more post updates:

1 new option for the SF Barbour: http://www.iconicalternatives.com/2015/12/01/barbour-x-to-ki-to/

Some VERY good new options for the QoS TF Cardigan! And I also added mini-reviews of the UO option and the Perry Ellis options http://www.iconicalternatives.com/2015/11/30/quantum-of-solace-black-shawl-collar-cardigan/

    How about this one?
    Marco-Polo-Cardigan.jpg?resize=296%2C400

Also, I know some folks were looking for tab collar dress shirts. I can't remember if Hawkins & Shepherd were mentioned here already? :s Priced between 85 and 95 pounds

    https://www.hawkinsandshepherd.com/collections/tab-collar-shirts

Also came across a decent option for the Zara Enjoying Death Shirt from Calvin Klein for $25 to $50 (amazon 8-) ).

Happy man today! Rolled the dice on a Banana Republic jacket for the Morocco look and it came today!

This is what it looked like on the ebay listing:

    s-l1600.jpg

And, believe it or not, here it is in person with those Benetton trousers and a pair of Bass suede shoes with the brick red sole (I have enough boots, and wanted suede shoes for a while)

    BR-jacket-Morocco.jpg

Jacket is really nice and in almost perfect condition. Three button, but it buttons as a 3-roll-2, dual vents, and slanted pockets.

All in, that's $35 for the BR blazer, $40 for the trousers and $25 for the shoes. Just need the right tie now!

Yeah, I was kind of in panic mode after watching David's video and seeing how light it looked. I was going off the pics that other members had posted of their real jackets, like this one from Meesta Bawnd

    Meesta-Bawnd-BC-Blazer-2.jpg?resize=209%2C300

I messaged the seller and they said the BR wasn't quite as dark as it looked in the pics. So I took a chance. I'll post better pics next week.

Also picked up this BR shawl collar cardigan for $25! 100% merino wool. Should be here early next week!

Finally wore the burton Neil Barrett alternatives http://www.iconicalternatives.com/2015/12/11/neil-barrett-trousers/
Really quite impressed. I actually went all out and wore it with the n peal mock turtleneck and blue suede racer jacket. The trousers are quite thick, they have some stretch but are a true slim fit. Overall I'm quite happy.

It just kind of stays on the right side of a homage as opposed a straight up copy, but sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and the venerable miyota movement make it a decent buy. I'm a little put off by the lollipop second hand and the Chronometer wording on the face.....a bit misleading I'm my opinion, but reasonable value and should tell the time well enough.

I usually stay away from the homages. I got burnt badly with an Alpha watch. The quality was so bad. But, that damn Debert just looks awesome and looks like a decent quality for the price. If a little extra money comes my way this christmas, I'll probably end up grabbing one. Great find.

I would also read through this thread at WatchUSeek:

    http://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/debert-seamaster-spectre-homage-3424906.html

Reviews and comments both positive and negative.
Thanks for posting this. As great as this watch looks I think I'm going to stick with my Seiko seems like a better deal.

I see that iconalternatives shows the Dickies Eisenhower as a budget QoS Y3 alternative. But it shows lists the lined version. I've noticed there is also an unlined version available. I suspect if you size down and then take a risk on being able to remove the logo (which appears to be sewn on with a patch) and possibly even the arm pocket (a little more risky) then it would probably make a fairly accurate alternative. Being unlined it will probably hang more like a shirt and may allow a tailor to make it slightly more fitted.

It already has the adjuster tabs and button cuffs and decent size collar.

    https://www.amazon.com/Dickies-Black-Unlined-Eisenhower-Jackets-XL/dp/B00LG0HJZ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480380760&sr=8-1&keywords=dickies+unlined+eisenhower

A video on youtube showing the adjuster tabs and unfortunately the arm pockets:

Thanks for that Portent. I haven't looked at the post in a while and it's due for an update. So I will include your notes. But I do remember looking for the unlined version of that jacket and only finding it on Amazon UK.
  • PortentPortent Posts: 30MI6 Agent
Yes its on Amazon UK too. I am having trouble with the Amazon UK link though as it keeps redirecting (not sure why).

And it's also available in the UK from Dickieslife (which I assume is the European arm of Dickies themselves?):

You're right, it's a straight up 3 button from 2005. :D However, it looks like the previous owner pressed the lapels to extend them down to the second button. You can see the press line for the right lapel in the ebay pic. So when I have only the middle button buttoned, the lapels roll over the top button giving the effect of a 3 roll 2. That's what I meant.

That jacket actually looks like a 3-roll-2 that was improperly pressed into a full button 3. A 3-roll-2 and a full button three are cut differently, and pressing cannot truly change the lapel roll. It looks like the front of the jacket curves out above the middle button, which means that's actually part of the lapel.

Totally missed this! Love the options you went for man! Very interested in some more pics. I feel ya with the tie. I would really like to get Magnoli's tie for complete screen accuracy, but having a heck of a time getting a status on the tie. I think the most OSA ties youve found in terms of color are the Alkasu and The Nines ties, depending on the screenshot you look at :)) but they are not Knit :#

Thanks for the insight Matt S. I'm honestly not sure which way they went with it. When it's unbuttoned the lapels look like they end close to the top button:

    BR-Morocco-Jacket-alternative-unbuttoned.jpg

But when it's buttoned at the middle, you can see there was some roll there at one time:

    BR-Morocco-Jacket-alternative-buttoned.jpg

So the lapels are fighting against something. Maybe when the seller had it cleaned, they incorrectly pressed the lapels to the top button, as you suggest. Judging from the ebay pics, he apparently thought that's the way it should be worn. It's also from Fall 05 (it's in great shape for an 11 year old jacket), so who knows how long it's been in storage with all 3 buttons done up. I also found a Gypsy Kings concert ticket stub in the pocket for 2008. :p So that could be the last time it was worn.

Anyway, seeing as it has a somewhat natural roll to the middle button, I'm going to give them some additional encouragement with a very light press to see if that helps. Nothing too aggressive.

I received my Bond NATO strap from PhenomeNato and it is fantastic. I've compared it to an Omega NATO, and this is the closest match I believe you will find on the market. The seat-belt like material, color, and squared, polished keepers are very close to the Omega version.

    IMG_8601.jpg

Also, I found this blazer on clearance at Banana Republic for $6; it was more of an Army green color, so I used some RIT dye to get it closer to an olive color. Now all I need are brown buttons, and the jacket will have cost me $10 total for a nice alternative to the Barbour jacket.

Nice job on the jacket! It looks like the color came out very even, which is hard to get right!

I got one of the PhenomeNato straps in Bond, and posted a small review here, comparing it to $5 ones, and the Timefactors one

Well you were going to shoot me a mail with suggestions but I think you were busy being debriefed, I'd be honoured to do one. I will give the subject some thought after next week, unfortunately I have a funeral to attend and oversea next Wednesday.
